Title: Driver education missing ( NGC )
Post by: Wayne Orwig on July 16, 2018, 04:27:01 PM
I was returning from a trip yesterday (not on the bike) mostly on interstates. Not once, or twice, but FOUR times I had this happen.

I am traveling along at the speed limit or under. I am towing, so being careful. Traffic is a bit heavy and I am in the right lane. Typically not able to get into the left lane easily. There is a entrance ramp coming in from the right. There is a car, going at or ABOVE my speed, just AHEAD of me entering the interstate. I let off the gas pedal to give them more room. As they start to pull onto the interstate well AHEAD of me, they must suddenly see me in their mirror, and BRAKE HARD half in front of me.   They would then run off of the road to get behind me at 30 miles per hour in 70 mph traffic.

What is going on. In all four cases, they had plenty of room to enter the roadway in front of me. Yet they decided that we both had to suddenly hit the brakes hard. I thought there was going to be number five, but that last one accelerated as I slowed a little, he pulled in front of me where there was a lot of room, and all was well.

Notice I did NOT use the word 'merge' , since these people have no idea how that is performed.

I could never be a big rig driver.

Its pretty common here, in Arizona. People just dont seem to know how to merge properly, matching speeds etc. I have always done most of the driving, but recently due to cataract surgery, my wife started doing all the driving for about 3 months. I had to re train her in how to merge into traffic, as she would panic,  sometimes , and put on the brakes after merging as you describe.
I taught my wife to drive a standard transmission car when she was 16, and we were dating, now 40 years later it seems she forgot alot of the techniques I taught her.    :thewife:

Sorry for the thread drift, but I recently found out that the way I was taught to adjust the side view mirrors in drivers' ed was wrong! Thought this was worth mentioning as several people I've talked to have been doing it "wrong" for years.

My experience in Arizona is two levels..."Too slow...or too fast!!"

You have to be on HIGH ALERT ALL THE TIME...and especially on two wheels!!

What I enjoy is when you are behind someone merging onto the big road. its going fine, the car ahead of you seems to be speeding up to merge. my concentration goes to my left for my spot. then the car in front of me dynamites the brakes because he hasn't grasped the concept of merge. fun times!

Just pointing out the fact that in any time period the really bad stuff getting recorded outweighs the good stuff .

I've done it that way for a number of years. No reason to waste mirror space looking at the side of your car.
