I took my2001 California special out of the garage got down the road 1/2 mile I can smell something , looking down I see sure enough my regulator is smoking.
I got the bike turned around made it back to my street . I shut it down and pushed her home
Bike was running spot on before this. I will take a look asap.
Has anyone had this happen to you ?
Thanks
Zebep .

Not on my EV but I have changed a few. What you need to do is get the wiring out of the bottom of steering neck and inspect it, it could be compromised.
-
Two 98 EVs. Both failed the voltage regulator. No smoke, just stop passing the charge through.

Mine was very dramatic. My kid was a few hundred yards behind me and thought I was on fire. He said the smoke completely hid the bike.
Oh -- and it happened just outside bamf park. There's n dealer near there.
-
My guess would be loose bullet connectors on the two yellow wires and perhaps the red leading to the battery,
The heat from the resistance would soon melt the insulation on the wires letting out magic smoke.
-
Thank you all for the info. I will check it out, and post what I find
-
The Wiring looks good the regulator is toast.
-
The ducati regs can let go with a bit of smoke. If you need to replace you need a single phase reg with a min capacity of 27 amps.
-
I have seen then crack, and water gets in them. That can let out the smoke.
As Kiwi mentioned, it is common for the two yellow wires to fail at the bullet connector. When you replace it, make sure those are clean and tight.

I have one off my other cali , its apart any way. I'm going to try that, same year 30 serial #'s apart

Yes mine burnt up good! lots of smoke. The yellow wire and bullet connectors are good to go, as is the red ,red black and light blue wires also good

Replace it with a Shindengen FH020AA but make sure you get a genuine one and not a fake.
These will work with either a single phase 2 wire or a three phase 3 wire stator. Just use 2 of the 3 wires from the regulator connector.
-
Could you get a longer one...?

Thank you antmanbee !I checked them out very interested .I have the yellow 2 wire .How difficult is the install? I'm not that great with wires

Check out this web site and these videos. They sell and support the Shindengen regulators. It is not too difficult to install.
I just hooked mine up to the stock wires but others say it is best to make your own dedicated circuit.

Just an aside-- I got my reversing gearbox for the trike from roadstercycle.

Its most likely a few more bucks and a little fiddling but an Accel one for the larger Evo motors will do the job, you will loose the function of the charge light.

I don't know if it makes any difference but I was discussing the Ducati Energia Reg/Rec with Roy a while back and was surprised to find that it's a Series unit not a shunt (by far the most common)
The FH0200AA is a shunt unit, Shindengen also manufacture a series reg/rec but it's more costly the SH847 its on the Roadster Cycle website.
I don't know its specification (I've sent off a mail to find out)
It may make no difference installing a shunt instead of a series, shunts tend to run a bit hotter usually.
If/When I need to do the Sport I have, providing the SH847 meets the bill it's what I intend to use, but if not I'll probably go with the FH0200A.
Just thought I'd mention, I'm probably making a mountain out of a molehill, as others have replaced their series unit with a shunt and not reported a problem
Shindengen are absolutely first class Reg/Recs

Long ago, I replaced a regulator for a friend on a Bassa. I used an after market shunt type. It was so long ago that I can't recall the brand. I think they are gone now. But he constantly complained about a 'burning' smell.
I put back a stock unit and he was happy.
I truely think that I just jinzed it just because I mentioned that it might run a little hotter. But, maybe it really did run a lot hotter. I had used the shunt type in a few previous repairs with no issues.

Just a follow up on the Shindengens
Jack at Roadster Cycle stated either FH0200AA or SH847 are suitable for single phase use
He didn't have a spec sheet for them but told me the ratings were as follows
FH0200AA approx 27A single phase
SH847 approx 35A single phase
So all you need to know is the alternator rating to check it

I found the ShinDengen website
Note the different types
https://www.shindengen.com/products/electro/motorcycle/reg/
The OEM Ducati Energia equivalent would be the "Single Phase Open" type
-
Hi Roy
I noticed that Shindengen show them in their literature, the problem is nobody seems to sell them and I've never seen any single phase Shindengen Reg/Recs
Even the SH847 is a rare beast & it's 3 phase
The FH0200A seems to be ubiquitous.
Of course you are right (as always) about the ideal choice, I've just never came across them.
