Post by: John A on July 24, 2018, 11:37:41 AM
Does anybody know where I can find some round shims, 25mm ID, 30 mm OD, 1mm and 2mm thick? I've looked on the internet until Im blind, and all the usual sources, Mcmaster, grainger, msc and have come up emty

What's  the usage?  How critical are the dimensions?  How critical is the material?  Good lathe worker could make them.

I can see that the 30m OD is the problem. You may have to get the 25 ID and stack them up and turn them or grind, depending on how hard they are. Seems like a very odd shim.

Convert the 25 mm to 1", 1 mm to .040" and 2 mm to .080" and maybe you'll have more choices? Just an idea.

Or just buy the 25 mm i.d. x 36 mm o.d. shims that McMaster sells and grind down the o.d. to 30 mm?

      Greetings John,
I have a chunk of material (stainless) thats 25mm ID and 32mm OD  and 1.5" long if you have a machinist that could whittle some out for you.
The alternative would be to locate a GOOD pump repair shop and see if they have some or a sleeve that could be machined to your needs. Lemme know

I can make them but I was hoping to just buy some. I can chuck them up in the lathe and grind the ID but don't have a way to chuck them to grind the od. so I spose ill just get some with the correct od and grind them. it looks like it'll be faster than trying to find some. thanks

If you can do the ID to 25mm, then just build a little mandrel with a stem of 25mm OD by perhaps 3mm proud.  Then build a 'cap' which has a recess of 25mm ID and perhaps 5mm deep.  Drill a small center hole.  Mount the mandrel in your chuck, add the shim, add the cap over the mandrel, use a live center and good pressure on your tail stock to pinch the shim between the mandrel and its cap.  Now work away on the OD down to 30mm.  Work gently and the shim shouldn't slip in the pinch.  I often spend hours making fixtures like this that get used for 5 minutes.

That sounds like rear drive pinion shims. Tired of spending $2 for them?
The one on the end under gear is 35mm OD , the inner ones are 31 or 32 OD.

That's it, Steve, thanks, I thought it would be an industry standard thing. Ill do it like Patrick said, I was hoping not to but itll  keep me out of the heat, fixing my old trucks that need attention too. I'm grateful I'm not a few hundred miles south this summer!

Am I the only guy left who buys shim stock and the traces what I need with a scribe and then cut it out on a small hobby band saw?

Easy enough after that to deburr edges and use it.
