Title: Dallas = Too Hot
Post by: SmithSwede on July 24, 2018, 08:26:47 PM
We have had some stupid hot weather.   Too hot.   Texas is normally hot in the summer.  But seeing 108 on the dashboard . . . is unacceptable.

I couldn't ride at all in that heat. I rode from CT to ME over the 4th of July in high-90's heat on the slab, and couldn't have been more miserable, especially when the Mass Pike came to a screeching halt with a grinding traffic jam.

As I got older, I decided that summer is NOT the best riding weather.

It's called "HELL SEASON" - - aka summer in the Valley of the Sun - -

Phoenix was 116 today...the VOC was 104...that's known as "silly hot" ...even with 12-13% humidity....and that is NOT enjoyable to ride at all...

One might as well be in a frickin' BAKE oven!!

After the past few days at 108+, it was a relatively comfortable 98 in Dallas today.

'Officially' it was 116 in Phoenix, unofficially it was 120.  I drove two different vehicles today, my Honda Odyssey (AC died yesterday) and a rental Hyundai of some sort provided by Honda service, both fluctuated between 119 and 120 whilst moving. :whip2:  Somewhere I have a pic of my old Town and Country displaying 126 several years back. :violent1:

Out of respect for the rules of this board, this is not a political view, just my observations.
I live on a lake in northwest Ct.
about 20 years ago there was plenty of iceskating, the local vounteer FD used to bring trucks out on the ice to clear the snow for skating parties.
That hasn't happened in a long time, skating days are few, if at all lately.
About 10 years ago? they decided to stock walleye for fishermen.
last 5 years I've seen them floating dead in the summers.
The water is much warmer than it used to be, I can only guess this is why they die off.
The state forrest across from me, as well as the AT, was full of healthy spruce trees.
Now they are barren and falling down. I hike a lot, and see many other changes
Not looking to blame anyone, it could be a natural dying off of this planet.
If this post is causing a problem, feel free to delete it. That was not my intention.

Scientific question...what caused the ice age and what ended it?

I  have friends in Plano. They showed me their forecast for last week. 100+. Meanwhile here in stl we were in the low 80s with low humidity. Right now its in the upper 60s.

... just my observations.

...and that's how I interpret your post. I live in CT also, but grew up in Michigan, and I hear the exact same thing from my friends and relatives still there, although usually it's w/respect to the deer hunting season. No snow in November to track anymore. We also have a great skating pond near us, and on those few days in winter when we can skate, all I hear from the old-timers like me is how "back in my day" they used to skate all winter. Not anymore!

But back to the heat and riding; When I used to work in So Cal after college, I knew an old Brit (he had a Vincent Black Shadow parked in his apartment that used to repel girlfriends because he wouldn't move it....he couldn't care less if the "birds" didn't like it) and I asked him one day why old Brit roadsters were always convertible when the weather was so bad there. He said he thought it was stupid for Americans to ride around in convertibles when the sun was out..."..the sun just cuts you to pieces.." was his thought. I feel the same way about riding when it's hot.

I'll take hot over cold for riding, but that's just me.

Funny thing about the weather, it keeps on changing.      (Shamelessly stolen saying)

Everybody complains about the weather but nobody does anything about it. Much cooler in the Ozarks today and lower humidity. Wish I could blow off work and ride in the boonies!

I was in Dallas at the end of June for a wedding. Late afternoon, full sun, outdoors, pushing 100. Quickest ceremony I've ever been to!

Wasn't worth loading the shotgun for, was it?
Seriously, I wish them well. What happens each day after the ceremony is more important

When it's this hot, I wet my T shirt and wear my older First Gear Kilimanjaro jacket.
Vents front and back. Best I can come up with. And try to stay away from city stop and go also

It's funny...being further South, you'd think my part of Louisiana would be even hotter. However, we've just had our normal mid to high nineties with 85% humidity. Hot, but we've been able to work in it. I remember training in Ft Smith, Arkansas back when I was an agent. It always seemed extraordinarily hot there during the summer months...we regularly had "black flag" days.

some people get used to hot/humid better than others. I'm not one of those. but I seem to handle cold weather better than some.

My wife is from Dallas (Garland, actually). We will be going down to Dallas for a family reunion after it cools down.

She is now in Washington with me, on the water. Even though the temperature is currently reaching into the 90s, it always cools down quickly when the sun sets and the winds pick speed blowing across the water. She really misses Texas, but not the summer temperatures.

Down in the backside of the planet it has staggered up to 46F, up from 28.

However, the days are beginning to get longer, roll on summer.

Our evening news seems to be starting off with the terrible fires in Greece, supplemented of course with the numerous ones decimating California and some of your parks. Don't envy you guys at all.

Can only speak for my area, northeast USA. It's been dry and hot, especially the last few years. Spruce trees, common to this area are like skeletons. Doesn't take much to get them burning. Add to that the winds we have been having have laid many trees down.
But more than likely, some person is responsible for starting the fires, that's usually the case.
Enjoy your upcoming summer riding season!

I intend to thanks Yogi. Bike gets put back on the road on September 27th. Have to track down a whine in the gearbox first.

The mean temperature in Omaha, Nebraska for the entire month of December 1983 was 6 degrees.  Not the high, not the low, the mean!

I told God if he moved me someplace warm I would never bitch about it.  I've been out of the cold for for 32 years and have kept my pledge.  I make observations and comments about the heat, but never bitch.

Summer riding simply means being on the road at dawn and home by 2.

When I was in the Army, I worked traffic control for the West Point football games and the Christmas Eve midnight service at the Cadet Chapel two consecutive years. The temperatures there along the Hudson were cruel in the winter. Whenever I feel I might complain about the summer heat here in Louisiana, I remember those moments dodging automobiles sliding in the snow and ice, my feet frozen in my jump boots, my hands protected only by white gloves, and my ears numb under my helmet liner. Since then, I've not minded the heat at all...
