Title: V7II oil change - oops
Post by: redhawk47 on July 30, 2018, 12:13:32 AM
Changing the oil on my V7II today - After draining the oil I discovered that I didn't have a filter on hand. So I put 1.8 liters in (instead of the normal 2 liters) and ordered some filters. Moto Guzzi recommends new filter each oil change.

Questions: I'm planning to change the filter as soon as they arrive. Do I really need to? Or can I wait until the next oil change?
Next question: If I change the filter without draining the oil first, will I lose more oil than what's in the filter? Looking at the drawing of the pan in the parts manual I think not. Has anyone tried this?

On my '04 EV I change the filter every other oil change. On the EV you have to pull the oil pan to change the filter.

If you follow the maintenance schedule, you could skip a filter change. If it was me in your situation I would, but then again, I don't have a V7 series bike to know it's oil change quirks.

Did you actually remove the filter?  If not, isn't that too much oil?  Mine would struggle to take 1.8L, even with the filter changed

My experience has been that if i fill to the top line of the dipstick, it will put it into the airbox.  Bike level, dipstick in but not threaded at all - 1/2 way up is enough.  My bike doesn't use any oil, and it maintains at that level reliably, and just a bit of mist in the box.
