Hi everyone
My loop keeps rolling, but its definitely leaking oil out of the back of the gearbox. I've been topping it up, but I'd like to fix it properly.
So....
Can I replace the seal without removing the gearbox from the frame?
And do I need to replace any bearings while I'm in there?
Sorry to ask such obvious questions but the parts book is hard to decipher and I'd rather be forewarned as I'm without transport while the bike is on the ramp.
Thanks so much as ever

thanks Charlie, really appreciate it...
Just reading on Greg Benders site and looking at the parts book and I'm a little confused....
Should the layshaft seal be rear of the rearest layshaft bearing?
That's a horrible sentence but I hope you catch my drift!

Yes, the seal is outboard of the output shaft bearing. On a five speed you can just pluck the old seal out and drift a new one into place. On a four speed, you need to remove the "ring nut" (type with four notches) and it's star lock washer, then pluck the seal out.

Will I be needing a special tool to replace the lock ring or is there a work around??

Really appreciate the help

It is so much easier with the tool. less damage, better job. find one to rent, maybe Harpers. MG cycle has one http://www.mgcycle.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=657

I still don't think we know if this is a 4 speed or a 5 speed, but on a four speed note the orientation of the nut and star washer. I reinstalled the nut backwards and it caused the star washer to chew up the seal.

sorry guys, its a 4 speed
