I parked my Sport several years ago, well, 13 years ago, mostly because the transmission was jumping out of 2nd gear, both under load and while decelerating. I had other good running bikes so never felt the urgency to fix this problem. And, I put 123,000 miles on the Sport. So, the bike owes me nothing. But now I'm retired, and that Sport still looks so damned good that I want to get it back on the road. I searched world wide for second gear and the sliding sleeve that mates to it and they just aren't available anywhere. I know some people have swapped helical gear sets into their Trannys but I just love those straight cut gears. I even went to visit Stan in Gainsville, FL to see if he had the gears since he campaigned a Sport on the race track. Even he didn't have what I needed. But I kept asking people and I finally found a local guy who has a shop dedicated to fixing motorcycle transmissions. He mostly does race bike transmissions but will fix any motorcycle transmission. He welded up the rounded off dogs on the gears and recut them with a 5 degree under cut.
The gear set looks like new and I can't wait to put this bike back together and ride it again. This guy told me there are only about 5 shops in this country that do this kind of work. I'm so lucky I found him and doubly lucky he's local to me.

wow. nice find. you definitely made a silk purse out of...well, um, some sketchy useless gears. as these bikes get longer in the tooth and shorter in the, uh...tooth this shop would be good to have in one's back pocket. Oh, and 123K miles on a sport! damn, that's some serious riding. how do you avoid riding the rear brake pedal with heavy boots on?

Can you share the contact info of this transmission mechanic? I have a couple of 96 Spots and a couple more 97 Sports, and I'm looking for someone who could either make me a spare set of gears, or maybe even changing the gears so whatever bike I would pick to modify would shift more like my 1996 GSXR, if that is possible, which I don't know.

I doubt wheather anybody could make a Guzzi 5 speed shift like a GSX-R1100.
The shift mechanisms are totally different.

Hell, I know of a couple of places here in NZ that could do it. But the price for a couple of sets would buy you another Sport!

Thanks Voncrump, that sketch explains a lot, especially the agricultural 'clunk' with each gear change.

I second that. Gear shops are like hen's teeth, usually way too busy with production stuff, rarely set up for repairs/heat treat etc.

Despite the fact that it'll never shift like a gixxer I'd REALLY like to copy the straight cut gears in the transmission because the close ratios make the Spot my favorite bike by far. Yes, I understand it will be expensive but I want to be able to ride it far from home with confidence again. Please share contact info...

Let me know if this guy could possibly machine a set of new gears for our bikes. I'm pretty sure that there are a lot of 1100 Sport riders (I am 1 of 488 members of the 1100 Sport riders forum) that would be interested in buying a set of new replacement or a spare gear set.

Will be talking with a buddy today whose close friend makes gearsets for HDs as a side gig; have heard him complain loudly about how loose the Motor Company's gear tolerances are... Will see if he has the time and/or interest to make what we need. Of course, the first step will be getting everything measured up and copied. Fortunately I have a contact in a Zeiss lab so will see if she can copy the guts of my 30K mile trans - like Johnny Cash said 'One Piece At A Time'. IF this is possible it won't happen until November or so. Stay Tuned.

There is an 1100 riders forum?
The "Moto Guzzi 1100 Sport" is a FB forum. I usually get great feedbacks from members around the world when I have an issue or question related to my bikes. Some members also post great details about restoring their bikes, issues they had, or where they located hard to find parts. All in all, its a great resource of knowledge if you own one of those bikes.

Old thread, I know, but I'm really starting to think about adding an 1100 Sport in my collection at some point, and this seams to be a good thread to bring back. Off question, what is the final drive ratio on these? I can't seem to find that information. 7/33? 8/33?

I found a good set of helical gears that came out of a V1000 transmission, and I'm wondering if this is a set that I could install into a 1100 Sport transmission, just in case that I would ever needed to rebuild one of them? Milage and year of the donor bike of the gears pictured below is unknown, but the seller looked at them, and he stated that there is absolutely no damage to any of the gears.
Does anybody here know if this set pictured below would be comparable with the straight cut or helical gears of the 1994 - 1997 1100 Sport?
I also found a five speed transmission coming of a 4k miles 2003 MOTO GUZZI CALIFORNIA EV. , but that transmission is $620.00

IIRC they're a direct swap for the straight-cut gears.
I have an older 5-speed on the shelf just for this purpose, was going to install it for the lower 1st gear on my tour last year but ran out of time.
After some careful measurements, discovered that by adding a spacer about .080" thick to the trans output spacer, the u-joint yoke clears the shaft cover spigot on the older transmission, and the small distance change shouldn't have any effect on the dynamics of the shaft. After a complete bearing renewal and shimming of the helical trans it's going in unmodified for a good testing.

I think you'll find the sport has the same spacing as the other 5 speeders, Some Leman's II's had a close ratio box top speed was limted to around 180 kph. The three dog engaugement mechanism probablly has a greating impact on gearbox funtion over and above anything else. I've got aroun 100 000 miles on mine did a top end rebuild a little a while ago and got a lot of torque back well worth it IMO, it was blowing blue smoke or using oil at this point.

So I have an injection Sport and an 03 California.
I don't notice any huge difference in gearing, they are both long geared and 5th pretty much useless :copcar:
I think if you ran an 03 box you would soon forget it.
