Title: Cal 2 rear drive seal replacement ??
Post by: brider on September 29, 2018, 07:38:10 AM
Looking at my rear drive, I can't figure out how to coax the housing that the large seal is in from the main case. It appears like the housing was installed using some kind of sealant, as evidenced by the squeeze-out at about the 12 o'clock position in the image below:

I myself have never had this unit apart, and I bought the bike with under 6k miles on it. The Guzzi manual I have has NO re-build instructions for the drive unit; is it typical to seal this housing with sealant? I bought a seal kit for it from MG, and it has a gasket for this housing. I find it VERY hard to believe the PO took this apart with under 6k miles on it.

So, in the absence of sealant, what's the trick to get the housing out? A few soft blows circumferentially with a rubber hammer on the ribs? It LOOKS like the housing gasket surface sits BELOW the outer surrounding rib of the larger unit, so I can't wiggle a pry blade under it.

Tempted to just pry out the seal and replace it alone if the housing is bonded in.

Here's how I do it:
Remove all of the cover/flange bolts, insert a suitably sized socket into the axle spacer, turn the legs of my smallest three-legged puller so that the "hooks" point outward and grab the edge of splines. The o-rings around the hook's pivot help to keep them in place.

Put it back together with exactly the same thickness, it adjusts gears mesh. You may want to replace inner seal while your in there. If you haven't already disturbed the cover plate it may be better to just replace the big seal with the cover in place. They can be tough to get out, mostly destroying the seal in the process.

You mean the female splined piece will pull out the seal housing? I'm having a hard time imagining how they're attached, and if they're not, is there some kind of thrust bearing interface??

The kit I bought has the inner seal, but honestly, I have no interest in pulling the housing if I can just replace the outer seal with the housing intact.

I pull the flange w/bearing out along with the female splined hub and ring gear. If you're not intent on replacing the gasket(s), then pluck the seal out and replace it only.

Thanks, I'll just do the outer seal then.
