Title: Measure twice cut once kind of storey
Post by: canuck750 on October 15, 2018, 11:02:41 AM
I am finally getting back to working on my 1974 Benelli 650S Tornado after being distracted by Laverda's and Morini's for a couple years, most all of the parts are now in place to assemble it. I usually take careful pictures of the full disassembly of a bike, well in this case I should have taken at least 100 more. The factory manual is sparse on illustrations and the translation is amusing to say the least.

A couple years ago I saw a NOS cam shaft on Ebay for real cheap so I bought it and finally I put the motor back together on the weekend, well almost...
After building the bottom end and top end I went to install the left side cover and wait a minute!... the end of the cam shaft Is protruding a couple inches where the cover has no opening.

Scratch head, consult pictures again consult manual, what the heck!!

They say a picture is worth a 1000 words, when I figured it out I could only come to think of a half dozen choice ones for my stupidity!!

Original cam on top, NOS replacement on the bottom. They look the same except..... the new one is for the 650 kick start only model and the points are on the opposite side of the motor, the points cam is on the other side of the cam shaft for my bike. Every thing else is identical and if not paying attention (such as in my case) the old cam has the points shaft extending out of the threaded shaft.

So after a couple days of carefully assembling the engine it all comes apart again.
