Title: Quota in CL
Post by: grebmrof on October 29, 2018, 03:58:34 AM
While I recall a thread on this Quota in NY, I was surprised to run across it in some wanderings of CL looking for a bike I wouldn't need or necessarily want, but find it so very tempting - although the price for this puppy is very steep.  Here is the ad for the bike:

https://longisland.craigslist.org/mcy/d/2000-moto-guzzi-quota/6689396088.html

I'm not remembering all of the issues with Quotas that owners have addressed over the years - I am thinking of maybe some fueling issues? cracking aluminum rims, problems with crossovers, etc., etc. and I am sure there may be a few more.  I find this one a real beauty and in light of the upcoming V85 that has been posted about which has some very distinctive paint combinations - although I know this one isn't for everyone and that the asking price would hold (has held?) most folks back.  It sure announces its presence with that livery.

I've tried to call the owner and haven't been able to reach him, perhaps that is just as well as geez I could end up taking a road trip yanking a trailer along to go and fetch this one before I would come to my senses.  There just is something about it that washes away some of the grief one would have putting it right to ride it.  It must be all of the gaudy and in your face it has.  I think it is a masterful paint job - some might say lip stick on a goose.  Yes, I know...asking $4900 for probably a $2500 bike is just not right, but then again...  A fool and his money you know.

Appreciate any comments folks have on this one.  Sorry to be repeating an earlier thread, but wasn't able to locate that thread with a search or two.  Thanks.

I think there's something fishy about this one, it's been on CL for months and months....might be legit and the guy just keeps renewing without answering his phone, but something doesn't seem right. I agree that if I won last week's Mega Millions, I'd buy it just for the paint job.

We've seen that one before, several times .... As the seller implies, it's a $3000 bike with a $2500 paint job, and he wants to recover most of the price of the paint job.

The only guy who would pay that, methinks, is a guy who (A) Wanted a Quota and (B) Intended to put exactly that Italian-colors paint job on it ....

Pretty rare combination of contingencies, so I suspect we'll be seeing it again over the months and years ....

Bob, think you are right...lovely to look at but better to have someone else own it.  Seller doesn't respond to CL emails, his phone won't accept a voice message (..."mailbox is full")...but I caught him while he was driving home (I think)...seems to believe his is worth this because he dumped $2500 into that paint job.  Bike has sat a lot, has a FL title (he's in Long Island), no issues have been addressed and he wants $4500... He told me he also has a "gorgeous HD trike FS on CL" - he does, at an equally steep price.  Special bikes - HA!

Like Lannis said: "...so I suspect we'll be seeing it again over the months and years..."

You got that right.  I was just tempted for a short while and then, meh!

I don't know, I kind of like it!

And you'd only have to deal with the quirky guy for the one transaction.  And if you are local, go see it, ride it, if a person loves/likes it then hand over money, a bit of paperwork and low mile Quota is yours.

But yes, a buy/fly/ride would be a pain with a bad seller.  Also a buy & ship might be a pain.

Unless you guys are calling total BS on the original miles?

From my standpoint, I love the paint job, the miles are fine and probably real, the seller may be quirky (Lord knows we're all used to dealing with quirky guys in this hobby!) ... but if he's really expecting nearly $5000 for an 18 year old bike, of which similarly nice examples can be had for $3000 .... then it's all down to "is the paint job worth $2000 to you?"

Normally, no paint job is worth that on someone else's bike ....

With that low a mileage.. maybe the fixes haven't been done? Ecu? Wheels? Exhaust? At any rate, I'd tread carefully, no matter what the price.

Chuck, near as I could determine, no problems were encountered or have been addressed aside from a sidestand switch issue...he apparently had the paint done, I really like it too, but not enough to part with that money and he is hard over on his price (CL $4900, expects $4500).  In the short time we spoke he took the time to mention paint, low ball offers and the sidestand - has had it for about 4 years, it carries a FL title and probably tag and it certainly hasn't been ridden much, no luggage or accessories.  Sounds to me like an expensive starting point to make a nice bike (with a distinctive and pretty paint job) right.  So, I think I will watch for this one to find a home in someone else's garage...

And Lannis, yes we are all a bit quirky in sometimes many ways.

I've talked to this guy a few times about a year ago. quite eccentric on the phone and very aloof in conversation...I offered him 3500 which I thought was very fair and was all  but insulted then a month later he emailed and offered it to me for 3500. Too much wrong with this....though if someone lved nearby I think it is worth having a look and offering a fair price....that is if you like the paint...it's loud...but I like it

I find the paint job tacky.

I agree. It's awful. Like running around on a Harley painted up as the American flag. The only tricolore that really worked was the Ducati 750 F1; the early 851 might scrape in.

The only Tri-Colore I find attractive was the Coppa Italia.

The Coppa may be the best looking Guzzi ever made.

Different strokes and all that, but I never have liked the fairing on the late model V11S. <shrug>

Just received a email from the owner— no fixes on the quota...😂
