I know there are members here living in the beautiful state of Alaska, where earthquakes happen every day, but this is a big one.
Hoping you all are safe.
Powerful quakes buckle Alaska roads, trigger tsunami warning

Yessir, while things are that bouncy often in and around Alaska, that close to Los Anchorage it could stir up some silt. The Friday ones are the worst - foul up the whole weekend. I wish the best for Matteo, Galen, and our other members up that way. Circuits have been busy today as I've tried to contact my son in ANX and sister in Kenai.

tsunami warning cancelled, still some pretty powerful after shocks.

Anyone heard from Yukonica lately? He's in Whitehorse. I wonder if he felt it.

Boy talk about Rock n Roll. A good time was had by all, kinda like a party that got outta hand. Lots of broken glasses and dishes. Even had a tool box take a dump. Amazingly none of the old Tonti's came off thier side stands. My lift danced around pretty good . Fortunately my cinder block foundation stayed in one piece. Some roads collapsed and some were cuttoff by avalanches. None of the liquor bottles broke so we are set for the weekend. Power is on and the house is warm. Others weren't as lucky. Time to make pizza.
Cheers

Best wishes to all up there.

Glad to hear that both home and the Double Shovel made it through ok. How's the rest of town?
-
What's the Double Shovel?
Glad you're ok Matt - but more importantly, no Guzzis were damaged in the party! Glasses and plates - no big deal.
They were on their side stands? Is that the best way to park in a quake zone?
-
My kid checked in. He says he came home to an overly-warm house on account of the freezer door got knocked open. Otherwise no discernable damage at his house. Most of his co-workers took the excuse to take the day off. His current assignment is internal help desk. Nobody was calling any problems in because they were all gone, so he went home early too. When we spoke he had started his weekend already and was at some friends' house. There might be damage to the highways leading into town, but at first survey, Anchorage itself suffered only isolated damage. There is no state of emergency or even urgency.

Double Shovel Cider company is our Cidery, we make hard cider in a number of flavors. My favorite is soaked in Bourbon barrels. Lots of big tanks on site, they stayed upright, just a little movement.
As for the side stands they did better than my big toolbox, I guess it’s too top heavy.

Still aftershocks in the 3-4 range.

I heard from him today. He didn't feel anything.
Friends who live in Palmer got home from Anchorage to a lot of cleaning but no structural damage.
Freeway was down to one lane. No shaking here in Yukon.

Thanks, Matt. Got it.
The news said people were vacating the city despite torn up roads in anticipation of a Tsunami. Guess that never happened?

hope you guys are fine.

Earthquakes suck big time.
Good to hear the Canucks checking in are in reasonably good shape.
As a kid I remember the 1964 Alaska earthquake. Anchorage got hit pretty badly then. I think it was about a magnitude 9 and was a major disaster. National Geographic did a write-up on it; some pretty scary stuff.

I remember feeling the 64 quake in Portland ,Oregon at the time. My Aunt lived up there then. That was a mess. Sounds like this one is not going to be as deadly, so good news on that front. Still bad news either way..

Living in SoCal, pretty used to quakes up to about 7. Those last about 90 seconds, and if you are in a building the shaking is so violent your mind tells you the building will fly apart at any moment.
A 9 is so huge as to be incomprehensible to me. I read one account that the shaking of the 64 Anchorage quake lasted 8 minutes, and that it was so violent and went so long the guy seriously thought it was the end of the world and the planet would fly apart.
Glad it looks like most folks avoided major damage on this latest quake. Chalk a lot of that up to modern code and having crap strapped down.
