My bother in law worked next to White House. Said whenever the former president and his wife were in D.C. They would stop in to just say hi the the gov. employees that where still there. Prob. the last president who had actual foreign policy experience.

GHWB led a full life. Saw a lot on the world stage. But it's the story of his time in The Pacific Theater that really move me:
After finishing flight training, he was assigned to Torpedo Squadron (VT-51) as photographic officer in September 1943. As part of Air Group 51, his squadron was based on USS San Jacinto in the spring of 1944. San Jacinto was part of Task Force 58 that participated in operations against Marcus and Wake Islands in May, and then in the Marianas during June. On 19 June, the task force triumphed in one of the largest air battles of the war. During the return of his aircraft from the mission, Ensign Bush's aircraft made a forced water landing. The destroyer, USS Clarence K. Bronson, rescued the crew, but the plane was lost. On 25 July, Ensign Bush and another pilot received credit for sinking a small cargo ship.
After Bush was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade on 1 August, San Jacinto commenced operations against the Japanese in the Bonin Islands. On 2 September 1944, Bush piloted one of four aircraft from VT-51 that attacked the Japanese installations on Chi Chi Jima. For this mission his crew included Radioman Second Class John Delaney, and Lieutenant Junior Grade William White, USNR, who substituted for Bush's regular gunner. During their attack, four TBM Avengers from VT-51 encountered intense antiaircraft fire. While starting the attack, Bush's aircraft was hit and his engine caught on fire. He completed his attack and released the bombs over his target scoring several damaging hits. With his engine on fire, Bush flew several miles from the island, where he and one other crew member on the TBM Avenger bailed out of the aircraft. However, the other man's chute did not open and he fell to his death. It was never determined which man bailed out with Bush. Both Delaney and White were killed in action. While Bush anxiously waited four hours in his inflated raft, several fighters circled protectively overhead until he was rescued by the lifeguard submarine, USS Finback. During the month he remained on Finback, Bush participated in the rescue of other pilots.
Subsequently, Bush returned to San Jacinto in November 1944 and participated in operations in the Philippines. When San Jacinto returned to Guam, the squadron, which had suffered 50 percent casualties of its pilots, was replaced and sent to the United States. Throughout 1944, he had flown 58 combat missions for which he received the Distinguished Flying Cross, three Air Medals, and the Presidential Unit Citation awarded San Jacinto.
Because of his valuable combat experience, Bush was reassigned to Norfolk and put in a training wing for new torpedo pilots. Later, he was assigned as a naval aviator in a new torpedo squadron, VT-153. With the surrender of Japan, he was honorably discharged in September 1945 and then entered Yale University.

When I think of George H.W. Bush, I can only smile and offer my profound appreciation for all that he did for this country, what a man he was. I will hear his voice for the rest of my days.
It is such a shame that this greatest generation of citizens are leaving this world and leaving those of us who are behind with so many, many amateurs. Here is hoping that we will see his type again, I am sure they are out there. Thanks George H.W. Bush #41, what a great job you did in so many ways
-
He was a man to be admired. Truly one to be judged, not by what he said, but by what he did.
I recall an interview, years after H.W. lost to Clinton, with a member of H.W.'s campaign committee. He related:
We knew we were in trouble and were having a strategy session, PTOS present, when one member of the committee:.."Mr. President, we must leverage your history as a war hero." POTUS looked at the member of the committed and said:..."I was no war hero. I flew over and watched as heroes died below. The first person who mentions my participation in the war as part of this campaign is fired."
He was, certainly, my hero. I am saddened by his passing. Fair winds and following seas Mr. President.

The Union Pacific Railroad repainted this locomotive in his honor in 2012. It will be leading a funeral train from Spring, TX to College Station.

RIP President Bush.
Here's what a real alpha male looks like: “Leave the kid alone,” George Herbert Walker Bush said, when, as a teen-age boy at Andover, he spotted a fellow-student being bullied. As if he were Zorro, performing a casual rescue and then vanishing, Bush left Bruce Gelb, the undersized Jewish kid he’d aided, to ask a witness, “Who was that?” Gelb learned that it was Poppy Bush, “the greatest kid in the school.” - New Yorker

I met George and Barb on a flight from JFK to Lisbon. Must’ve been around 1994, I was an Air Marshal and he was on the road post-presidency giving speeches. Shook their hands and chatted for a while. I sat next to him across the isle in first class. He had an entire field office of Secret Service agents out of Houston dedicated to him. Those guys were tired, he was on the road 3 out of every 4 weeks. Anyway, immediately after takeoff he asks the flight attendant to bring him his entire meal. He devours everything in about 10 minutes then heads to the bathroom with a clothes bag and changes out of his suit and into sweats. Falls asleep with an eye mask until we were on decent into Lisbon. Once again he heads to the bathroom (with bed-head and boxers sticking out) with a bag and changes back into his suit and tie. Emerges totally spit and polished! We touch down and the SS whisks him off to the limo. One of my most memorable flights doing that job.
-
My aunt the limo driver had the privilege of driving the Bush's around on more than a few occasions, though not while he was in the Oval Office.
She'd drop George off somewhere and then take Barbara shopping. She has several signed pics of her with them, usually thanking her for her outstanding driving abilities. But the one of her and Barbara together reads, IIRC "Thank you, Kathy, for a most enjoyable afternoon of shopping and girl talk. You made Tampa the best stop of this entire trip. Much love, Barbara Bush!"
My aunt always said that they're just regular people. They get up in the morning, take a shower, get dressed and go eat breakfast. Just like anyone else. Anytime they came to the Tampa area, they would call and reserve a limo and specifically request my aunt for their driver. That request was never denied...
I never met the man, or his wife, but from all accounts, they were both "good people."
Fun fact, when HW's son got elected, his brother Jeb was the governor of Florida. Jeb has always been afraid of flying. So he called his mother, and asked her for "that limo driver in Tampa." Yup, my aunt had the job of hauling Jeb and his family from Florida to DC and back. Twice. She says those were the two longest limo rides she's given anyone.

That's a fact, Dusty.. no politics has served WG well. There are plenty of places to talk about it other than WG.
Of course, everyone is wrong but me..so I'll bite my tongue.

Sully will live out the good life @ Walter Reed from what I've read. He'll be better kept than some vets.

Bush was at the top of my chain of command. I joined the Army when I heard Saddam rolled into Kuwait. They said they needed electricians and although I tested high enough for some really interesting jobs, I went in as a 52D as we felt that was my best shot at getting to the big sand box. Four days before I was heading to Saudi they put us in formation. Four names were called. I had the fourth highest GPA so I was called last. We were then put in Patriot Missile systems for more schooling. Stormin' Norman threw his Hail Mary pass and it was over before I got out of AIT.
RIP Mr. Bush. You had integrity.
-
That's enough fellas , are we clear ? Thanks .

You don't understand the difference between history and politics? I recounted the history of Bush I just like everyone else did. I chose to include FACTS that are unflattering, but unflattering facts aren't "politics" any more than they are fake news.
When we're allowed to only repeat YOUR choice of the facts we don't have a discussion forum. We have religion, with the forum your church and you the pope. I'm not much for religion.

This is a solemn day for Our Nation. A war hero who dedicated a large part of his life to serving Our Country has passed. This is no time for political jabs. We will have a similar day soon for our 39th President, and it too will be a solemn day for Our Country.
I'm really itching to use the ban hammer. If you don't have anything nice to say, then please walk on by without saying a word...

To land on an aircraft carrier as I spent many hours on the USS Lexington watching planes land.

The train run from Spring Texas to College Station was an awesomething to watch. People lining the right of way almost the whole distance.
Very nice ceremony to watch yesterday.

I heard someone report after the funeral on Wednesday that they talked to some politician who observed that after hearing all of this about HW that he wanted to do a better job during the rest of his life and that he would. That George HW was really an inspiration to many. I felt that was a very good thought to keep with us as we go forward here. RIP George HW Bush.
