Title: California Vintage Seat Options ?
Post by: kballowe on December 14, 2018, 12:19:55 PM
I have the original skunk seat on my 2009 CalVin, but the white portion has yellowed - and try as I might, it will not come back to white.

There are some replacement seat covers on EBay and maybe they would work.  Anyone ever try that ?

I haven't found a source for a new skunk seat, and the only aftermarket option that I've found is Corbin - but they will make the panels whatever color ya want.

I have a Russell Day-Long seat that I'd trade someone or sell outright.  I'm a 29" inseam, so it's a bit too tall for me.

Thanks

Kevin

Hi Kevin,
the original "skunk" seat has always been a bit beige or "creme white".

I replaced my first seat from 2006 with one from 2018.
The one from 2006 was much whiter but not "pure white".
The white stripes on the tank look always different.

You can clean the white with a "Magic Sponge Eraser" (melamine foam).
Afterwards use https://wackchem.com/products/motorcycle-care/20/s100-seatbench-care-new
and it looks like new.

Ahhhh - maybe that's why I cannot get it white white white.  I have tried just about everything including the Magic Eraser.
hahahaaaa  I found some vinyl paint that's guaranteed not to come off........

It simply looks odd on a white bike

Do you have a white Vintage?
The white version normally just has a pure black seat.

Black Vintage => Skunk seat
White Vintage => Black seat
Orange/White 90 Years Anniversary => Brown seat

And this one from "The Royal Hashemite Court" (Jordan)  :wink:

Yes ... skunk is not original for a white Vintage.

I have been there and done that and can offer good info on the subject. I ordered a new black and white seat from one of the popular outfits that carry guzzi OEM stuff, I will withhold the company's name because I do not hold them responsible. When the seat came in the "white" part and yes it's suppose to be white not off white, came in as off white. That may explain the reduce price but it was OEM. A good upholstery shop can put marine grade white material back into the seat and it will look great, as that is what I did when I had MEAN STREET CYCLES to rebuild the seat after I got it. 150.00 for improved quality foam and the correct color. I have a new black CalVin saddle if you are interested you can PM me.

Correct, the white Vintage came with an all black seat.  When I was buying mine new, I had the dealer pop on a skunk seat to see what it looked like.  The white on the seat was NEVER pure white, and looked even dirtier on the beautiful pearl white paint.  I went with the black for that exact reason.

Try a Mr Clean Magic Eraser  on the white part of your old  seat and see if that won't brighten it up. Worked for me.

Some of these seats were obviously made with an "off white" material which can not be cleaned white. I even tried straight bleach on mine with no change in the off white color. :(

Yep.  Tried bleach and wheel cleaner and Bleach-White and magic eraser and WD-40 and and and

So, here's my 2008.  Note the white white white seat trim.  I had just assumed that they all had the white trim.
This is probably why I am so surprised that the one on the white bike has a sorta cream-colored trimming.

Here is my ex- 07, with the actual "white" insert. I think the white looks much better on these bikes than the off white looked.

Twodog, that's where I got my off white seat and even on the picture you could tell it was off white, maybe that why it was actually about half price, 180s best of my memory. Personally, I think an accidental run of the off white material was used then sold at a reduced price. Only guzzi woukd be color blind:(

I had Ned’s remake my Calvin’s torture rack from hell and am extremly happy with their work, white panel & all. The new seat is so much more comfortable you can ride all day without a sore ass.
