Can anyone point me to a thread that would explain the differences between standard and Dyna coils? =- Thanks

Don't know if there is one? If not, you are starting one now!! I use them when stock coils went bad on my LM3 and Cal2, the green ones. 3 ohm's 35,000 volts
They have more output voltage than the stock ones
What bike are you putting them on?

I think the standard coils are the oil-filled canister style, right? I don't know how many volts they put out, but they have a resistance of 3.5 ohms - at least that's what the manual has told me in the past.
The Dyna greens are 3.0 ohms and are epoxied solid. They're smaller than the stock coils and put out a hotter spark. The primary side isn't directional, meaning they can be connected either way. Positive can be attached to either terminal.
They do have another newer style of Dyna Coil with a different secondary connection. I think if I could afford them, that's the way I'd go.
Most recently I needed a set of single output green coils. I had some in my box of coils, but they're dual output. The Dyna site (I believe that's where I saw this data) said that if using a dual output in a situation where only one output is needed, ground the second one. So I did that and it works fine. For some odd reason, dual output coils are more plentiful used and much cheaper. Doesn't make sense to me but that's the way it is.

I will be putting them on a 850 T
wirespokes - if using a dual output in a situation where only one output is needed, ground the second one.
So I should get the Single Output (Easiest) and If I can afford it check out the newer style.
Is there anything that has to be changed besides the coils themselves? Things like fuses, wireing, lights?

Be aware that Dyna are now advising that if you are using the dyna ignition then you should fit 5ohm coils not 3 ohm.
Alternatively I expect you put in an inline resistor.

So, it all depends on what ign you use, original points set-up or their Dyna3 electronic ign.
Here is the info off their website, same as what I have from installations.

I use the Dyna3 and green 3ohm BUT I don't leave key turned on w/o running bike. That is why they say 5ohm for street use and no resistor for electronic ign only points.

On my T5 now are magneti marelli BM 201 A 12v - and there is a melted stamp "V30" on the plastic cap.
If I get the single pole Dyna Coil 5ohm, will the DYNAs have more power?
-
yes , those are the same ones I had on the Cal2 stock.

Possibly, will that make any difference to the bike? No, Unlikely.

Bob,
provided that the rest of your ignition is in good shape, you'll get a fatter spark which should mean slightly better gas mileage and easier starts. They will not affect the timing or the ignition curve. I believe the US market T-5's came with a points dizzy vs the crappy MotoPlatt electronic ignition.

Yes my T-5 has points.
From this discussion I am going to keep the points and get the Green Single Output Dyna Coils.
Any suggestions on where to purchase DYNA Coils 3 ohm, green single output. I usually buy through MG Cycle but they are out of stock.
