Post by: Kristian on January 24, 2019, 06:31:18 PM
Has anyone swapped Sporti wheels onto a carb Sport or Daytona? What's involved?

Thanks-

Kristian,
As I recall there is a width difference with the Sporti rear wheel and that the earlier swing arm is too narrow to use the 17" rim.

I'll dig back and do a little more searching in my notes, I owned both models.

Haven't one it myself but IIRC you need to change the rear brake caliper mount to the Sport i type.

Front will require different bearings, as the axles are different diameters between the Carb Sport and Sport Injection.

Rear will require everything.  The wheels are the same width and use a 160 section tire, but...

With differences in the bevel box and drive shaft, you'll need those from the Sport Injection, plus the brake caliper bracket.

And here's the obligatory question:  Why do you want to swap the wheels?  There are plenty of tire choices for the 18" rear.  I've owned a Sport 1100 for 22-years and have never had an issue with getting sport or sport-touring rubber for the bike.

I thought as much re the front; the driveshaft and axle are the same, and I suspect the rear drive box is not very different. No matter, too much trouble, even if the stock wheels are the heaviest in creation. I came across a cheap set of i wheels; cush drive, lighter, etc.

Every Carb Sport owner goes through this.  I did, early on.  One time, years ago, I weighed the stock wheels and was shocked at how heavy they are.  I thought of going with the then-available Dymags, but cost kept me from doing it.

The swap you are contemplating can be done.  It's just not a direct bolt-on.  You should be able to locate a cush-drive bevel box.  I just don't know if the relatively small weight savings between the stock carb Sport's Campagnolos and the Sport Injection's Marchessinis would be worth the effort.  If I was going to do it, I'd want forged wheels that would provide a significant weight savings.

Yep, just had them off for new skins; they are LOL heavy! OTOH, it ain't a Panigale and never will be, so well enough is fine. Plus it handles just fine with the rider-weight matched Ohlins springs front/back and a little commitment. If it was an easy swap, might be worth it.

The front Marzocchi forks are less wide, so the disks will scratch against the fork legs. So need the WP forks too.

Thanks, Paul. The moment it was just a bit more than slight trouble, I forgot about it!
