Title: IMS in Cleveland
Post by: rdbandkab on January 25, 2019, 07:46:50 PM
Anyone go to the IMS in Cleveland today?  Or will anyone be attending during the weekend?  Anything of import up there?

I was interested in checking out the Royal Enfield Himalayan...until I learned that it was only a 400cc single.   I'll wait for the release of the 650 in the next year or two.

We could use a new set of FIT EAR earplugs I guess, but not sure I want to make that trip for earplugs.  Our current plugs are still doing the job...and I could probably source a set of molded plugs elsewhere if, for some reason, one of our sets goes south.  We already have an older set for backup.

Getting ready to leave for the show now.  I really wanted to see the V85TT but, no luck.

I know you're no longer interested in the Hima, but just in case another RE strikes your fancy, there's a dealer not too far away from you.  Looks like they sold their Himalayans anyway:

I went up not too long ago and had a good time talking to one of the salesmen who was an avid trials rider.  He liked the Hima.  (but that's his job.  :)  )

I've enjoyed the Cleveland show in the past, but can't make it this year.  Last time we went, we stopped afterwards at Great Lakes Brewery.  Excellent food and beer.

I called them a few weeks ago and talked to a salesperson that seemed to be pretty cool.  (Steve?)  They were, in fact, out of the Himilayans, but he texted me when they received another shipment.  The shop is probably just over an hour away from me.

I "might" head up on Sunday...

I made it to IMS for a couple of hours today at Cleveland's I/X Center.  Thoroughly enjoyed looking over the lineup Royal Enfield brought to the show.  Its obvious when looking at items like the shift mechanism that there's been an effort to cost cut where it doesn't matter, but overall, I thought the little twins looked quite nice.  RE had a cutaway engine in the booth, and it appeared basic maintenance on the valves would be simple.  The cam/rocker arm cover had only four bolts holding it down, and valve actuation was accomplished via forked rocker arm with screw and lock nut adjusters.

Here's a couple of pics.  The next to last one shows what appears to be a 'monoblock' setup for the throttle bodies.

The Indian, based on the power train of the Scout cruiser, attracted attention, too.  Looks like Polaris has determined that HD isn't their only target market.  Like the trellis frame!

Getting smaller and smaller every year.
Most likely my last trip down.  Even a lot of my vendor friends won't be returning.  Just no money to be made.
I do enjoy the local brew pubs down there, though.  Went to Fat Head's for lunch and a black lager and then a pale ale.  Nice stuff!

We were there Friday and will echo it gets smaller every year, but we have lots of friends up there that go so always a good time.  Then Saturday on the return trip to Louisville we hit the Garage Brewed show in Cincinnati, was a moto weekend.

Agreed re: getting smaller. Not worth the 4.5 hour trek. Going to the Toronto show this year instead. Last time there was about 10-12 years ago.

Don't get too excited about the Toronto show.  It too seems to be getting smaller.  In contrast, the EIMCA show in Milan is about 6X larger.  I was lucky enough to be in Italy for work at the same time it was on.  I am now forever tainted...did I mention that the Italians have yet to become politically correct, and therefore use a larger number of "models" to show off the bikes.  Wow

No Guzzi, no aprilia, and no 650 in the Himilayan...   I passed this year.

Thx for the heads up, but will most likely take the 3 hour ride if for no other reason than to experience the polar vortex from the Canadian side

Ha ha.  Can't be any worse than here, eh Joe?
