No, but rode one a bit in the 80's.
Feels the same as a Bol Do'r 900 'till you open the throttle.

That's like 5 mi from me and Chuck. Anyone interested in seeing if he'll let me test ride it?

Yes.
But you have to show up with a stained t-shirt, scruffy jeans and flip-flops.......
That is a very pretty piece of industrial art.

Otherwise known as the Velvet Hammer & THE Gentlemans Express. Had 3, 1 red, 1 black & the sport touring grey '81 that took my son & I over the US in ''84.
Created by a 36 yr old engineer.
This has the taller US bars. The 37mm forks & plastic swing arm bushings were it's handling weakneses.
Originally mfg with an exhaust that echoed the F4 Phantom but when Honda execs heard it they were cocerned re; it's affect in traffic. Shelved somewhere in Hondas R& D dept riders wondered for yrs if it would ever appear somehow, somewhere.
With a D&D or Bassani exhaust no other m/c has or will ever sound like it. Crowds don't talk. They either stop & listen to it come & go or stand next to it & listen in appreciation knowing they were in the presence of a special motorcycle.
Dealers were afraid of the 24 valves & discounted them to move them. Quality techs stated they were as robust as the GL1000 GW.
This one's worth every penny. It's an iconic bike in history.
A friend bought a last yr (white '82) for $2400 in '82.

While I haven't been "Hunting" for this bike, or the GW1000.... they've always been on my "if I find one, it's comin' home" list.

Yeah, I was going to mention, "six cylinders and plastic swing arm bushings..what were they thinking?"

1978 Castrol 6 hour production Race at Amaroo Park
LeMans style start with a CBX getting very sideways at the start.
Watch also for Greg Pretty on the Yamaha XS1100 exceeding it's design parametres.
The "race on Sunday ... buy on Monday " philosophy was a big driver in 1978 motorcycle retailing.

IMO yes it's worth it if it's as clean in person & idles/runs smooth. I had the grey '81 untill selling to a friend with 51K for $5K & never an issue. The '81 & '82 had bearing swing arm bushings. A clean one like this with minor aging & 105K sold here in Reno ladt year for $5K.

I guy I knew had one.. Rode on the back of it out at the racetrack in Portland.. He set up his Camera on a tripod ,and was snapping pictures of the race. Right then a CBX with pipes on it, got passed by a 400 Honda-matic.. I asked if he snapped that pic, but no response, other then a glare.. First year models both of them..

6 cylinders?
Well you can get a stereo tape and a color TV
Get a back-seat bar and reclining seats

A friend worked at a local Hona dealer when these were new. They contributed to a vo-tech school every year. One day the owner told the service manager to get a CBX and prep it for delivery to the school.
He fired up a CBX pinned the throttle and locked it, then walked away. The poor thing howled until it ventilated the case. They then loaded it in the truck and delivered it to the school.

Restored this one a couple winters ago. Made enough on it for half of my new Griso.

I went today to Honda of Winston-Salem to look at the 82 CBX they have on Craig's List for 6800.00. It looked good from 20 feet but up close there was many parts that would need to be replaced due to excessive rust such as chrome luggage latches and other Crome parts. It only has 14k miles and has been sitting for years. From the experience of buying an 82 650 silver wing a few years ago I learned the hard way that what seems like a fair deal can double fast leaving one with a bike that's worth less than half of what you have in it. The first five miles I rode the silverwing there was fluids leaking from every orifice, every system had to be rebuilt because it had been sitting for years. Before buying a. Ike if this age one had better figure EVERYTHING needed to bring it to spec.

I had an 82 for about 12 years. It was a joy to ride and a pita when the carbs started giving issues. I hate selling her, but I don't miss anything but the novelty of her. There are few bikes that sound as good as that 6 with the two 3 into 1 Kerkers.

Oh and for the win on the, 'I sold it and now I'm kicking myself' award,is behind the CBX. My sweet 535is that I let my neighbor who was having financial issues, "buy" for a year because he was going through a biz bankruptcy. He was to sell it back to me for the same price I sold it to him for. I was doing him a favor. Big favor. He moved and sold the car for a very nice profit. Told me he was sorry, but it kept him from"losing everything". If he had still lived next door, I would have burned his house down.
