Thinking of buying this motorcycle. This dealership is about 1 hour from me. Seems like a good price. Never bought a V7 before. What kind of questions should I ask before purchasing ? Thanks for any help.

Is that a good deal?? Some the dealers are blowing new left overs out for that same price, and I guess the warranty might factor in to it?
-
Only question I would ask is if the first service has been performed on it. It is almost time, and by the time you ride it home and back, it will need it. Should be part of the deal, then you won't need to worry about it. These bikes need practically nothing, just check 'em over occasionally. I put 15,000 miles on my V7 III Special in the first 14 months, and do my own valve adjustments and oil changes. It helps to have the owners manual and service manual.

I'm not a fan of the tail chop ... be interesting to see if the original plastic rear fender was cut off or removed ... it does a lot to protect all the electrics under the seat. Guessing the original owner just hacked off the plastic at the rear of seat. Also, the rear fender is 2 parts and might be like $350 or something if you wanted to go back to stock.
Also, he has removed the right side passenger peg. Probably not a big deal as the seat is not really made for 2 people, but I'd make sure I got that as part of the deal.
He has put on an after market exhaust, was it remapped? If not, I'd consider a Beetle map for it.
In CA, there are 2 dealers with brand new ones advertised at $6995. Check out GP Motorcycles in San Diego and the dealer in Sonoma. For a while GP was saying "no extra fees", usually they add like $1200 for freight, prep, doc fees, etc ... then they add CA tax & DMV for us in state folks.
-
Oh, first service, officially it isn't due until 932.06 miles (yes, that is what the manual states! )
Dealers in my area wanted ~$550 for the first service.
It was pretty easy to do so I did it myself for ~$70 in oils, filters, gaskets. (ordered the stuff from AF1 in Austin)
-
Before you drive out verify what the OTD price is to make sure they don't add a bunch of "dealer" fees. 1st service is nothing more than an oil change and valve inspection. There should technical be more stuff done like retorque the heads but I'd bet that get done a lot less than you think. All the 1st service items are easy to do at home if you remotely handy with a wrench. The tail chop is a kit the rear fender was not cut up.
Price $6,700 isn't a screaming hot deal. . But if you like it buy it money isn't everything, lack of it is!
-
I think it's a pretty good deal assuming you go for a test ride and like it. You're not paying the dealer fees and you also may be saving sales tax on the dealer fees etc. Probably saving around $1000 off the new discounted price.

Like when my wife goes to the store and habitually buys stuff we have triplicate of at home already becasue she had a coupon and saved $0.50. She comes home and tell me how much she saved and I'll asked her how much would you have saved if you didn't buy it at all?
There is no such things as saving when spending.

I have a 2017 V7 III Racer.
The one in your fotograph is missing its seat cowl; plastic w/ big oval race # placards on each side. As stock the Racer also comes w/a small, totally useless wind deflector atop the head light. I'd try to beat the OTD price down at least to
~6200.00. You will like the fully adjustable riders' pegs and rear shocks. The front end, for some, has inadequate suspension and brake. If you own it you may feel a need to compensate for those things. Help is on this forum. R3~

FYI, there is no more recommendation to retorque the head bolts on the smallblocks.
That ended with the introduction of the Hemi heads.

I don't think I'd pay that much.
New leftovers all over the place.

The mirrors and exhaust are expensive so if you were going to add those on a new bike it helps with the savings. The missing parts take away from the Racer look so if you don't care about that.

Sorry I didn't read the entire add...560ish miles....did they mention why? Has this been round the shop a while?
Seems like you should be sure they did that first service...or that will be part of the deal...as others have mentioned.
I bet they have some room on it and it can't hurt to see what they'd do,
If you like it....that's what matters most
Let us know how it goes

So now its basically down to an oil change.

So now its basically down to an oil change.
Well, three oils, but basically yeah. That and a general inspection of the whole motor and chassis to make sure nothing is amiss from assembly.

They check the valve clearance and make adjustments if necessary or if the customer brings something up.
I had my dealer do first service to keep a report with them during my warranty time and test rode several used bikes while they were doing the service so that was a plus.

May I change my alleged mind?
You'll be paying near new price for a bike with a curious past, from a dealer having zero experience with Moto Guzzi or any lasting interest in that bike or you, as a potential continuing customer. Look for dealers left-over sales. Work with someone who has a stake in the business. There's a good chance to make a deal including a warrantee and you can start with a clean sheet on an unmolested bike. R3~

Absolutely +1! And don´t limit your search to the Racer! There are a lot of nice versions of the bike in the market, perhaps e.g. a Special suits you more regarding rider´s position, looks, ...
Tells you a since 6 years happy rider of a V7 I Stone (who has of course ridden the III and regarded it as better).

On the Breva, that lower part does quite a bit of protection, I think they call it a battery protection cover.
On my own bike it suffered a direct hit from a large gooly; yes, it did protect the battery and I did replace it. The plate stayed intact but it cracked all the mounting holes with the impact. Also keeps a lot of crap from hitting the gearchange etc. I personally think it is an OEM part worth keeping in place.

Lots of 40 year old bikes out there is less than 1,000 miles on them so a 2 or 3 year old bike with almost 600 miles isn't a shocker. I'm sure the story was the same. New baby, no time or wife is making me sell or I bought this as a starter bike and after completing 500 miles I ready for a 190hp liter bike. It really doesn't matter.
I'd assume this dealer keeps a supply of bikes not only through trade-ins but also buying at dealer auctions. Most likely how he got the V7. If he did buy at auction he paid about $3,000 for the bike. After years of trying to sell my V7R with no success I looked at using it as a trade-in. Three different dealers told me exactly the same thin saying they'd take it as a trade and give me auction price for it because that is exactly where it was headed if we made a deal. Auction value for m V7R was sub $2,500 no matter what aftermarket stuff was or wasn't bolted onto it.
In any event just like painting you home prior to listing for sale and curb appeal it adds no value to the property but helps it sell. Same goes with the exhausts and other goodies on the V7. Nice to have but doesn't increase the value.
At $6,900 the V7 will be at that dealer for a loooooooooooooog time.
I think even buying the bike at $4,000 it be hard to flip at $4,500 or at least it's take some time to do so. Lots of people love the look but just won't commit to the bike or brand. That and cafe' bikes are now passe and the world is now board trackers are no in vogue its not a good combo for premium dollars at sale time.

How often do you think the modern day motorcycle sales outlet (not old school dealer) actually goes by the book on the 1st service. Heck I bet most don't even change the oil filter. Honestly maybe the valves should be checked but the 600 mile service thing for the most part on modern day machines is nothing but a money making scheme. The whole fastener checking thing is a joke. They are originally torqued at the factory, supposedly re-checked at dealer setup and then need to be re-re-checked at 600 miles. Honestly if a dealer came out and told me "we" dodged a bullet because they found a lose fastener at the 600 miles service my response would be apparently you didn't do your job at dealer setup.
If fastener is found lose at the 600 mile service there is something wrong as technically it has loosened at least once and possible twice in the last 600 miles. It should not be re-re tighten it should be replaced.
Heck my Tacoma didn't get a oil/filter change until it was either 1 year old or 10,000 miles. Transmission and gear oils get changed around 40 or 50,000 miles and I'm not aware of any fastener check that has to be completed.
Motorcycles! If your not over maintaining them you must be under maintain them.

Yes the valves need to be checked as well (though the head bolts should still be left alone). I don't buy the first service at the dealer for warranty bs, Magnuson-Moss has that firmly covered.
As for the need for first services, I perform them AND CHECK accessible/obvious fasteners precisely because I don't trust dealers to do it during setup.
Kinda like when we bought the 07 Sportster and while performing the break-in service I found not only were the intake manifold bolts MISSING, but from lack of marks they'd never even been installed!
I do believe that first services on bikes are largely BS and shouldn't be needed in this day and age. I think they still exist for two reasons:
1. CYA for the manufacturer to protect them against liability (shift that liability to the owner/dealer and/or catch potential issues and correct them).
And
2. Drive business back to their dealers. So many who do their own work pay for this service because they are worried about a fictional relationship between it and the warranty. Others will get used to going to the dealer for future services. And frankly dealer service departments are important for dealer profits so any uptick in usage by their customers helps.

I didn't do it to retain the warranty. I did it to continue a report with the dealer because there are always "questionable" warranty items that having the dealer on your side helps.

Which is why I said "if you were already going to buy those items" It doesn't add value, but it equates to a savings of substantial money.

My bad, read that too quickly.
I get the logic, though it seems a pricey insurance payment.

Wrong!
On a pre V7-3 if you don't re-torque the heads then set the valves you will be replacing head gaskets. The exhaust nuts need checking every 300 miles for a few thousand miles and screws will come loose.
The III needs the valves at 900 or so miles then you're good for a while.

I think you mean there is a potential for a leak not the head gaskets will fail and need replaced.
