Title: Any experience with Triumph 1050 Tiger?
Post by: flip on February 25, 2019, 02:26:59 PM
I've been looking for a used bike that I can travel on but that should also be fun on a curvy road. I need something with good leg room with my feet under me. I'm leaning towards some type of adventure tourer for their seating positions but I'd prefer a bike with cast wheels and a 17" up front as I have little desire to take a big bike offroad. And, apologies to the members here but I'm looking for something other than Guzzis.

I like the looks of the Triumph 1050 Tiger. Anybody on here have any experience with them? At the moment, it is probably at the top of my list with a Yamaha FJ-09 in 2nd place. I had been lusting after a couple of like new or new, leftovers but then I saw that they have 9 dealers in the USA...oh heck no!

I second the FJ-09...  It'll be taken into consideration when the next bike is purchased.

*We have an aprilia Caponord 1200 TP that we absolutely love.  Comfy and reasonably "flick-able" in the twisties.  They can be had for a song.
**Not sure what your aprilia dealer situation is though.

Thank you. I do like the Caponord but it's now a long way to a dealer to get any work done on it. The lack of Aprilia and Guzzi dealers is what is prompting me to seriously look at Japanese bikes.

I was even considering the Suzuki 1250 Bandit as I grew up as a Suzuki guy. But , after sitting on one, I'd have to add lowered footpegs and probably get the seat built up some. Not a big deal I guess so maybe it's at third on my list.

Look at the Kawasaki Versys.  Bulletproof and the '15 and up hand similar style as the tiger 1050.

Can't comment on the Tiger per se, but I tried (unsuccessfully), to wear out a 1050 Sprint ST.
Those motors are fabulous and if I could have gotten a shaft drive 1050 in a road bike, I'd probably never have owned a Guzzi.

I would recommend this forum:  www.tiger1050.com

The 1050 Tiger is an ADVstyled sport-touring bike.

Very well regarded by those who rode it as intended...  On pavement.

You get the upright Adventure bike seating and the wheels/suspension of a sport-touring bike.

I've only had good experiences with the Hinckley Triumphs.

Owned an 08 for 2 years and like a fool traded it on a new wing in 2012. Some 07's had piston issues corrected by the 08 model. I tried to find another in 2015 but couldn't. I did get the 1000 Versys a great bike too but not the soulful sounding triple engine. Both have very good suspension and there can be deals on leftover Versys for as low as $8-9000 if you are willing to travel.

I'm sure everyone gets sick of my Triumph comments. Oh well  This is the 955i but it's only had one problem in 73,000 miles- the stator crapped out on me. Put in a 'Merican made unit- no problem. I have gotten my $$ worth and she ain't dead yet!

Heyn Flip
I had a 1050 Tiger.
Sweet motor
Was a bit cramped for me even though the seat height was a bit taller than I liked, go figure. I’m 5’10” with 31” inseam for comparisons
It was much more sport bike then ADV imho
Like glider john said, the 955 is a peach and better if any off roading is in your future. I include hard pack dirt and gravel roads in that

Best wishes

I rode a Tiger 1050 SE for 5 glorious years.  It was a fabulous motorcycle.  When my Triumph guy (Jim Hamlin, yes, the Guzzi Hamlin Cycles) was lead tech at a Triumph/Guzzi dealership.  That's how I first met Jim.

When he left to get his own place he decided not to carry Triumph-only Guzzi.  I thought enough of my tech that I switched brands from Triumph to Guzzi.  Traded my Tiger on a leftover 2104 Norge.  As much as I love my Guzzi bikes (especially the V7) I sure do miss that Tiger.  Now, it was sorted with RaceTech front end and Ohlins in the rear, a custom seat I made, and a few other goodies, and became an east motorcycle to ride for 600+ miles at a time.  Take it to WV and PA and Southeast OH and it was a beast.  Great motorcycle IMO and one I miss.

I had a 2013 Tiger 1050 Sport (not available in US) and found it disappointing. It was my third Hinckley triple and just like the other two I soon got bored with the engine. You really can't beat a big twin with a  Shaft drive for all day touring.
I have at the moment  in the garage a BMW R1200GS, a 2010 model with the last of the air cooled motors. It is streets ahead of the Tiger in handling, comfort and build quality. The engine is just as powerful (105hp/88ft lbs)  and as none of the Triumph's low speed snatchy throttle response.

The US version has the non-snatch module installed.

My experience is 180 degrees from Molly.  My Tiger was brilliant from 6K to 7.5K for sure.  Zero snatch, all day comfort, and handled like an F1 car.  I did have the front and rear done which made a huge difference from as delivered.

"Jayhawker"  Made me laugh, haven't heard that used in a long time.  Ad Astra Per Aspera  The Kansas Motto.

You're not from around here, are you?  "Jayhawker" is still a dirty word on this side of the line...

The good folks of Osceola regularly petition KU to cease using "Jawhawker" as their mascot...

I had a 1050 Speed triple and loved the motor. One of my riding buddies has a 2008 Tiger and really enjoys it, both for morning rides as well as touring. There's a spectacular 2010 blue tiger currently for sale on the advrider forum on the east coast. If it were closer to me I'd consider buying it just because it's so nice.

I still like Gliderjohn anyway, he's a good guy

Attending Guzzi campouts over the past ten years has taught me that there really are some good folks in Kansas!

That blue Tiger is "Bluey" and was Hamlin's personal Tiger.  You'll never ride a motorcycle set up better than that.
There's a lot to that bike that makes it fabulous besides the suspension work.  Jim is a master on getting the triple to sing the sweetest of songs.

[/quote    Somewhat out side the box. HD Dyna Switch Back, great torque, handles good and can be made better with brake & chassis upgrades, dealers galore. And oh yea they are very reliable

I have an 800 Tiger and ridden two 1050s. I think the 1050 would make a great road bike. Power everywhere though I am no fan of the gear noise. I don't think you could go wrong with one and if you later decide its not your kind of bike I am sure you could sell it for what you paid for it. I have had zero problems with my 800 and am sure the 1050 is just as reliable.
