General Discussion / Re: New V7 Sport

Was the Special or Stone that you rode a '25 or '26. I think the '26's have more HP than the '25's due to different cams, fuel injectors but for sure a better exhaust system. My '26 Special feels like it has more HP than the listed amount. I can feel that it is close to the T120 Triumphs.

It was a 2025 special and a 2026 Sport. I could be wrong, I thought that only the Sport got the bigger fuel injectors.
That all got a larger air box and underside oil squirters to cool the pistons.
As far as I remember both bikes were in road mode.

All I know is I’m very happy with the sport as far as performance and looks.

I've had Dyna coils and distributer plate on my '74 Sport since the mid '70s. never a moments problem. I have silicon rubber plug caps, the insides are lightly coated with silicon grease. The coil caps are also coated inside with silicon grease. Many of the gripes I've seen on this site looks like rain, humidity intrusion. Not all ignition wires and caps can handle higher voltages produced by performance components. The complainers seem to have similar problems, they don't want to spend the money for quality components.

General Discussion / Horn test results. Should I buy louder ones?
« Last post by nwguy on December 24, 2025, 08:00:02 PM »
Before I buy new/louder horns for my 1999 Bassa I wanted to know if I add a relay with wires direct to the battery terminals to the stock horns, will the better connections make them significantly louder? Loud enough? Do I really need to buy new horns?

So I tested the horns using a free dB metering phone app from 10" and 14' away, first using the stock setup and then using wires direct to the battery terminals. For grins I also tested reversing the polarity to the horn terminals. My Bassa's left horn is the high tone horn. Low is on the right.

Battery
It was on a charger during this test since the horns draw a surprising amount of current. I didn't want test results to vary depending on battery voltage. Voltage readings were above 13 volts. I figure your battery will probably be charging most times you use your horn while riding.

Polarity
Original polarity was hot wires to inside connectors. Reverse polarity readings showed less than one decibel difference in loudness, so caring about this seems a wash unless there's some phase advantage that would require more testing.

Relay
To simulate using a relay without having installed one yet, I just used stout test cables with alligator clip ends to go from the battery terminals to horn terminals. I read this somewhere:
"Maximum allowable voltage drop for any relay or switch contact is 300mV (.300V)."
So the Direct db values may be a bit smaller in real world use.

I didn't have the stuff to make jumper cables to test the direct wiring with both horns on simultaneously. But based on the individual results, looks like combined they'd be significantly louder.

All readings are measured in decibels.

TESTS INSIDE GARAGE
       from 10" away   |  from 14' away
-------------------------------------------------------
Stock  | Direct | dB chg | Stock  | Direct | dB chg
Both:  114.8  |        |        | 99.8   |        |
Left:  116.9  | 117.2  | +0.3   | 102.6  | 117.1  | +14.5
Right: 108.4  | 115.1  | +6.7   | 87.0   | 108.4  | +21.4

Initially I did these tests in my garage with the doors closed. It's echo-y in there. I should have done all these test outdoors. So I did more tests to tell how fewer decibels there were outside than in the garage. No difference in 10" away, but 14' away:

OUTDOOR TESTS with stock wiring from 14' away
In garage | Outdoors | dB change from in garage
-------------------------------------------------------
Both:  99.8      | 92.7     | -7.1
Left:  102.6     | 92.4     | -10.2
Right: 87.0      | 82.1     | -4.9

End result, my horns make 92.7 dB in real life situations. I haven't found how advertised horn volumes are tested. Seems to me, outdoors from maybe a 30-50 foot distance would make the most sense. I suspect modern, louder horns rated at 120+ dB are much louder than mine.

Next up, same test on my stock headlight with a light meter app.

Turin, any update?  I was just pondering, when you changed the Dyna III ignition, did you change the pickup as well, or use the previous one?  Also, wondering about the gap to the pickup being within spec?  (I am not personally familiar with the Dyna III, but with other electronic ignition systems.)

I think Sherlock Holmes called this one a "two pipe problem."

Hope you figured it out, and Merry Christmas!

The Sport also has bigger fuel injectors. After riding both at the dealer, I feel that the Sport HP is underrated, or the 850 special/stone is overrated. Not sure why they are rated the same.

Difference in thrust is obvious. I rode one right after the other. Did not redline since they were new bikes, but up to 4500 rpm, the Sport was much punchier and felt like it accelerated faster.

Partly why I decided to get the Sport. That and the suspension/brakes upgrades.

Well this is very helpful. I did not have the throttles open. I had both plugs out, though. Tried with one plug in and got the same results.

I may just check the valves and bolt everything back up.

I must ask.  What is your compression check procedure?  Did you arrange to have both spark plugs out and have someone or something to hold  your throttle wide-full-open throughout the test?  Pressure should be around 160psi with no more than 10% variation side to side.  Your numbers are a clear indication that your throttles were closed during the test.  Common error. Reassemble and  you might find that everything is OK.

I wouldn't be surprised if the mark on the piston is simply fuel coming around the intake valve and cleaning the carbon off that spot. I doubt it's wear.

I finally did a compression test and found a disappointing ~80PSI on each cylinder.

The mismatch is normal, designed into other models too, actually beneficial because it creates a squish area that helps combustion. the "wear" arc you see, is the squish area actually doing its job.

still, 80 is not a good compression, have you tried to do valves leak test by pouring fluid into the ports? valve / seat sealing would be my first suspect.
