Valeo interference with neutral switch
« on: April 15, 2019, 07:10:14 AM »
What's the recommended modification to the neutral switch so it doesn't foul the Valeo Solenoid? This is on an 87 LM4.

Haven't heard of one, sorry

On the LM1000 in my case but for any of the 5 speeders for that matter, there isn't a lot of clerance between the neutral switch spade and the solenoid but it shouldn't foul as far as I'm aware, I'm runnning a Valeo on mine and no issue.

Just had look on mine it's close but not overly so

Maybe there is something, be interestiing to see what others have to say

Here's something from the MC cycle site concerning replacing the Bosch starter with a Valeo: Some models require minor modifications, for example V700 and Ambassador models require minor modifications to make clearance for the clutch cable and solenoid, others require the low profile neutral indicator switch bolt to make clearance for the solenoid.

When I first installed the Valeo I didn't notice it wasn't seating completely. The next time off I noticed it was contacting the neutral switch because there was a dent and paint removed at that location. I modified the neutral switch as much as I dared and it's been working, but it still seems like it could use more clearance.

Just put a valeo on my T3 and I didn't have any issues except when putting the solenoid cover on....that wouldn't work with the gearbox breather spigot which is next to the neural switch. As it was a nice cover I modified the breather and now the cover just fits...it needed a banjo fitting with a modified bolt which just gave that much more space.

valeo is stock fitment on LM1000.

Doesn't interfere with the switch.  The cover doesnt fit very well as its made for the longer slimmer Bosch solenoid.

Mines a later valeo specific cover...came off a cali.Of course on those later bikes the breather is at the back of the box but I wasn't going to start changing it's position with all that entails for just a bit of bling !

Wasn't on mine, although it's a Magni and just uses LM 1000 running gear.

Bike came with a Bosch starter, I know cause I'm the one who had to stump up for the Valeo.

Are you referring to that horrid plastic cover that went on the back, I dumped that, put on proper shrouded spades and never had any problems

What OJ says - the valeos didn't come stock till 88 or 90. My 87 LM had the Bosch when I got it and I was the one who replaced it with the Valeo. It also says so in the specs sheet.

So Frenchfrog is right, except it wasn't standard fitment for ALL LM1000. Only the later ones.

I also ditched the plastic cover and shielded the terminals. Where mine interfered with the neutral switch was with the more forward of the two mounting fasteners. I replaced them both with buttonhead allens which gave just enough room. No way would that cover fit except maybe removing material at that spot. But I'm not into useless covers like that, it looks better without it.
