rear flange out - crankcase damaged
« on: June 09, 2019, 11:19:47 AM »
Calvin 1100 engine

rear main flange recently out

was flipp-------ing tight in there

factory tool couldnt move it, so pressed it out

made quite a -pop- when it let go

now there is a nasty nick/scratch on the crankcase (maybe it was always there?)

about to rebuild the engine, should I worry??

thanks to all as usual    :thumb:

No problem. The damaged has no function. You seal the rear crank bearing with a paper gasket.

Check for a burr on the main bearing that could have caused this, carefully remove if there is one. Carefully remove any burr on the case that may make it harder to insert the main bearing or that might interfere with gasket sealing.

It might help if you can warm the case and chill the bearing before assembly.

It looks like a burr or maybe a machining chip was on the bearing carrier. I'd file it off, measure both if you have the capability, and don't worry, be happy.

This works as well as the purpose made gasket remover:

If the gasket is really stuck on, I've found that using a heat gun to make it soft makes it easier to remove.

Patience, elbow grease and a sharp one sided razor blade.

I tend to nick the aluminum with a razor blade. I use a scotchbrite pad.

I have a Toyota gasket scraper. It's brilliant! Best scraper I've ever used. Really.

As for the mark on the case? I wouldn't worry unduly. Use a thin smear of threebond on the new gasket and it will seal it just fine. DO NOT squeeze it on like toothpaste!

Pete - I just searched for Toyota gasket scraper and came up with ordinary scrapers and some sort of crankshaft oil scraper gasket. No Toyota gasket scrapers.

Will they know what i'm asking for at the Toyota parts desk?

Could you post a foto of this thing?

Never used them but there is such a thing as a plastic razor blade.
