First longer ride on my 02 California..
« on: June 07, 2019, 10:40:02 AM »
Just picked it up in Dec, and its my first guzzi...  Well Ive been tooling around, fixing little things, and getting to know the bike the last month. Well yesterday i took a trip up to Americade in Lake george NY, and put in a 250mile day.  So off the rip I love the bike! Its a blast to ride, and will cruise at 75-80 all day long...  A few things came up...  I need to recheck the valve adjustment.. When it got hot one side seemed to put out more tapping sound then the other..  Easy check...  next I really need to map her...  she coughed and spit once in a while..  plus popping on shifting, and decell..  Next...  I gotta do the TB sync right away...  its clear one cyl is working more then the other. A lot of thumping when adding throttle, over and above what I feel is normal...  Next the oil has a little fuel smell..  Might have to do with long hot stop and go riding...  or the sync being off...  or the mapping..  Ill keep a eye on it. plugs look good.. Left bank might show a little more lean the the right... but neither is terrible.  Might have been loading up at low speed, and the plugs cleared off on the highway trip home..  So I got some work planned....  and a few things to keep a eye on. Loving the bike though!!

Mines got the common tps stumble off idle and hiccups a little in the lower revs. Maybe yours does too. Fuel smell could be common fuel seeps from the plethora of fuel lines/regulators. ( same issues here)

My '02 Cali. with "cough" a little when I'm going slow and too little rpm. I'm finding it likes more revs than one would feel is normal for a cruiser style bike, but it does redline at 8k! It'll not cough if I down shift or speed up slightly. FYI- My '02 is towing a hack, so it will likely behave somewhat different than yours. Mine will NEVER see anything near 8k of course BUT I enjoy pointing to the tach redline for my HD buddies. They instantly become speechless cuz they have no idea what that means....
I ride to work, ride to eat, ride to nowhere for nothing.

So recommended valve clearance on these.....  4 and 6??    I see lots of debate on US vs euro spec... the 4 and 6 are the euro right?

Whaaaa   valve clearance was out to lunch..  .010+ on ex, and about .008 on intake..  So I buggerd something up when I adjusted them last... Either set them wrong, or didnt tighten the lock nuts enough. Ill keep a eye on them..  No wonder she was clacking!!

If she's popping check for exhaust leaks and especially the crossover.

Thats not loose, I thought my Lario was getting a little noisy so I took the tappet cover off, one of the screws fell out and dropped on the ground.
Enjoy your Guzzi, lots to love.

Ya I checked it all over. All tight, no signs of leaks. It has a aftermarket crossover, Lafrancini [sp] mufflers, and a open airbox... my guess it was never mapped after the mods.

Thats what I thought I would find. :)   So i adjusted them, and took her for a ride today. Seems much better!  So I dont know what I did last time. Ill keep a eye to make sure they don't open up again.  Now I need to get to work on setting the TPS, and throttle balance!  Thats next on my list... Still loving the bike!!

With those symptoms I would try 5 ounces of seafoam.

I do have some, maybe I will. Fuel system was real clean though..  But a touch wont hurt. Today or tomarrow Ill set the TPS on it, and then hopefully get the TB's balanced..

Crud in the tank will clog the petcock filter. Easy cleanup. Intake rubbers will have age cracks and leaks.

Black gorilla tape work wonders for sealing cracks in the intake tube. Remove clamps, 2 layers of tape, clamp. Put them on the list of rubber parts that need replacing when it is too cold to ride.

I checked the petcock over the winter. Sparkling clean. Rubbers are also soft and pliable. I went through a lot of the bike over the winter. I just got it in dec so a lot was unknown.  Its only got 9K on it though..
