I was out on a ride on my sidecar outfit yesterday and saw a deer coming down a hill. I slowed and it stopped, thankfully.

In the Adirondacks, NYS, we have wonderfully cute deer.  We also have terribly naïve tourists.  They love to feed the deer from their cars.  They stop in the middle of the road to feed Fritos to Bambi.  The result of the is that deer hang around the side of the road and wait until a car approaches.  Then the deer scamper up to the car for their expected snack.  Because of this, we have a lot of undernourished deer, road kills, car and motorcycle damage, etc.  The cops give out tickets for such behavior (to the drivers, not the deer).

My neighbors feed the damn deer.   There are generally 15 of them in my yard every day.  Lotsa carcasses on roads. Dangerous to ride. Need to rent a cougar.

 People who feed deer should be held responsible for their pets when they cause crashes.  That means financial responsibility for vehicle damage or loss, and personal damage.  Sued if required.

As a life-long inmate of upstate NY, let me offer you this little tidbit:

BTW, just because I'm mentioning government departments, this is not a political post.

The NY Department of Environmental Conservation (NYDEC) is the organization that sets the rules and regs for fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities in the state of New York. Some of the rules they set are in regards to placing salt blocks because the salt attracts deer. To put it bluntly, placing salt blocks is illegal in NY. Now, you are allowed to place "mineral blocks" which are salt and other stuff to provide some trace minerals and other dietary supplements. However, these must be removed no less than 30 days prior to hunting season opening because... salt attracts deer. Failure to remove them is considered baiting and is strongly enforced by the bunny cops. (DEC officers)

Now, another NY state agency is the Department of Transportation (NYDOT) and they manage and care for the roads in NY State. Part of that "care" is the liberal use of salt on the roads during the winter. Yep. They salt the roads. This turns snow and ice into slush, which is more hazardous to drive on because it is an inconsistent surface. Snow and ice are at least predictable, slush, not so much. So all this salt get scraped off the roads by the plows onto the shoulders of the roads, where it melts and creates a very large salt lick on either side of the road.

So... does anyone care to take a guess as to why deer in NY hang out alongside the roads? Yes, the tourists are part of it, but the salt is another. End result is lots of vehicle/deer accidents in this state.

I really need to get out of this place...
