Recessed throwout bearing with new clutch

so I just installed my new sd tec clutch plates with the new longer throw out outer body from mgcycle.  my clutch rod is approx 245mm
which seems right.  even with the longer outer body, its recessed about 1mm into the body.  with the other standard throw out body its recessed about 3-4mm.  I know with wear  it'll be better but is there something I should do till then?  longer clutch rod, added throw out bearing washers etc...

That's about where you want it with new plates. As long as the clutch releases (do test to make sure before fully assembling the bike) you're good to go.

The moving pressure plate is forward of the two friction discs.
When you activate the clutch, the throwout rod goes forward as it pushes the pressure plate against its springs.
So, as the friction plates bed in and wear, the pressure plate, clutch center cup, and throwout rod will all migrate slightly aft.
Hence your existing recess dimension will diminish down toward zero as the initial rough surface of the friction plates wears away.

The deep recess you found before taking it apart would worry me.  The nominal dimension is to have the outer body flush.  A mm or so either way is fine.  But recessed several mm might hint at some damaged linear component such as the rod or its receiver cup in the pressure plate.  Sounds like you have either solved that or corrected for it with the replacement outer body.

All that is true, adjuster & pushrod do wear a bit
But issue here is plates a bit thicker than oe
I just fitted newfren plates yesterday in my uk bike, after 20 years of surflex I never liked but am only here for summer so didn’t change them until slipping on Monday
Exact same issue, new plates .040 thicker each plate than worn ones
I just did what I always do, one extra washer in thrust pack
Am now 350 miles away, is perfect
Going to Italy next week, if it needs adjusting, is loads on adjuster now, removing washer very unlikely but simple if I have to.
Have done it to my other bikes and others many times, simple and works

I found those plates do the same thing when I have installed them. They tend to break in quickly at first. Often needing some cable adjustment at first.

I didn't really spend time looking at them, but I suspect they have some rough edges on the fraction material that makes them a bit thick at first.

I like the plates, so I just ignore it.
