Throttle body air bypass screws
« on: September 14, 2019, 07:29:38 PM »
A question for those familiar with CARC bikes. I recently balanced the ( unmolested )TBs on my B1200 following Pete Roper's instructions to the letter and the bike runs like a champ except for the well documented intermittent high idle.
One thing that I'm not sure is normal is that I had to open one bypass screw nearly two turns to get the idle balance equal ( only one screw is open ).
I originally thought the stepper motor was sticking but I pulled the line from the air  box and sealed it with my thumb when the idle was high but it made zero difference.
So I'm wondering if the fact that one air bypass screw is open nearly two turns is likely a culprit ?

What map are you running? If it’s an open loop map it might be worth upping the CO a couple of points. Odd that it’s intermittent.

Pete it's running the factory map.
Beetle has actually sent me a map but because it runs so well with the exception of the intermittent high idle I haven't got around to loading it and I just put the idle issue down to the stepper motor.

Hot on the heels of our phone conversation last night Glen.
If I was in your position and had a map suggested by Beetle and had the brains to install it..?
None of which are the case..
I’d do it immediately. After the change it made to my 2VPC Norge, it would be the first thing I’d do, it’s not like you can’t chuck the other one back in if req’d..

In general it is a bad idea to medicate a faulty behaviour with other software (if not clear that the software is the evil).

First the engine should run as it should, then you can optimize it with other changes.
Else the fault is still there. Isn't it?

The air bleeds only effect the idle balance, once the butterfly leave almost closed they have zero effect.
The Left hand throttle is set by the sacred screw

The bell crank is for setting the relationship between Right and Left throttle body, it can have a huge effect on the amount of air the motor gets as it jacks the Right hand throttle open if you're not careful it can get so far out
it seems like there's no way back.

Close both Air bleeds fully
With the bike idling screw the bell crank first one way then the other, (preferably with the stepper inlet blocked so it's not working against you) eventually you will find a point where the speed drops off as the RH throttle closes
Now when you open the stepper inlet it will add more air to bring the speed up.
