loop generator belt change
« on: October 04, 2019, 12:40:23 PM »
hi all...

end of summer fettling on my 71 V750 special

generator belt has been rubbing a great deal, looks like its very close o the end of its servicable life....

changed it out, as per gregory bender's instructions with a cross referenced belt.

My lower wheel had only one spacer in between the two halves and none others to be found on the crankshaft spindle.

I used some washers to space out the halves and have a good belt tension, ie a bit floppy but not too floppy. (forgive the technical language)

All seems to be fine

except

when riding, the bike is making a hell of a lot more noise than normal... It could just be the valves being set to spec (I do this every 6000miles) and maybe I've forgotten what they sound like.... but hmmmm

not really a question, just some paranoia sharing.

I guess I'll just ride it and see.

Greg makes a lot of mention about the generator brackets potentially failing, has anyone seen this? anything to watch out for?

thanks as ever

The generator bracket was held on using bolts, it's recommended you change the bolts for studs as this allows you to screw them in to full depth and lock them with thread locker, then the nuts take the wear and tear, Some brackets have an extra brace to one of the distributor bolts.
I was told Honda Civic exhaust studs.

You could make your own pulley spacers from any sheet metal, mine has about 5 I think.

How I tell if the belt has enough tension is to turn over the motor with a wrench on the generator pulley, you should be able to turn it without too much slippage, little bit's ok.
