Marelli advance mechanism removal

Hi All
I am planning to fit electronic ignition to my T3.  The new system uses electronic advance so I will need to remove the mechanical advance weights and back plate.   
How is the back plate fitted to the drive shaft and can the plate be removed without removing the housing from the bike?  In the past I have found similar arrangements fitted with a taper. This looks all together different but I suspect it’s keyed onto the drive shaft with a pin or similar.
Any advice appreciated.

Remove only the weights. Leave the back plate.

 I'm curious , what ignition system have you settled on , and why ? Peter

Thanks for your replies. I went with Ignitech system as it was still mounted where the points are located (as against crankshaft sensing type) and it eliminated the mechanical advance and uses electronic advance.

  I must have missed something , I was looking at their website and the only ignitions that came up , were both for the later Guzzi's that have electronic ignitions to begin with .  Always curious  , Peter

The complete advance mechanism can be removed by plucking out the felt oil pad at the top and removing the screw under it.

I was unable to see if this is a wasted spark unit. Wasted spark systems can be troublesome on engines with irregular firing orders like Guzzis.

Somewhat related Q:  Felt pad is intended for a couple/three drops of motor oil at interval to lube advance mechanism... is mechanism on coarse ACME-like threads with an aggressive helix angle?

  ^^ Upon reading the info and viewing the parts , the unit has 2 pickups , so I'd say no waste spark .  Peter

I don't fully understand the question. The only threads are those on the screw that holds the advance mechanism to the shaft.

Two pickups with one shutter window may indicate a wasted spark. Wise to know before use.

its located on the distributor, which is geared to the camshaft - and has a pick up for each cylinder - therefore no wasted spark.

i.e. for cylinder 1, it will be triggered every 2nd crankshaft rotation,
