Gas tank insert V7 III
« on: November 18, 2019, 09:01:34 PM »
I'm not sure why there is an insert in the filling hole of this tank, but for those of us in California it adds an extra bit of annoyance.  We have large vapor recovery systems over our filling nozzles, and it makes filling an extra hassle. Yes we often defeat the recovery system (by holding it back) when filling motorcycles anyway, but the insert can still get in the way.  Do they just pop out or what?

On my MkI V7 (2015) I simply removed all the screws holding the gas cap on, removed it, popped the fill restriction out, and reattached the cap.
All of 5 minutes.

I apologize for not taking a deeper look before my original post.  It appears the insert is welded (or epoxy'd) in.  It is a single integrated piece which includes the ridge that serves as the female side for the screw-in cap.  No screws to undo.  I suppose one could attempt to cut out the bottom but given this is the gas tank...nope!  Not going there.

I'm aware of those "filler cuff" devices but I'll just suffer through filling my tank clumsily.  Don't want to carry doohickys around!

Now that's a real pain in the proverbial. The designer of that piece of malware needs a serious rocket. Likely cheaper to manufacture & robot-friendly, but certainly not user-friendly.  In the service station hoses over here that would likely mean splashes all over the tank, every time. The tank cap surrounds on the earlier tanks, both metal & plastic, are built in sections & held on with screws. So all comes apart. The surround on the V7C's plastic tank was actually elegant, that of the later metal tanks somewhat basic industrial, but at least they worked better than that would. If you can't come up with a way of cutting that out, I seriously consider seeing if the earlier metal tank fits. A lot of money for a small (but regular) annoyance. I never did like the new  tank cap on the III anyway.

When we moved on from regular gas, the restrictor was required so a person could not put leaded gas in their unleaded car. There were likely all sorts of reasons for this, to include not poisoning the catalytic converter.

The common "fix" for this was to punch out the restrictor.

When my part of Indiana started testing vehicle emissions, a punched out restrictor was an automatic fail. A new market opened up for replacement devices that converted he opening back to the small hole.

Thankfully, I've never lived somewhere they test motorcycles.

Successful motorcycle management calls for a degree of finesse on the part of the rider. Same goes for fueling.

Some of the airheads came with a spring loaded trap door (flap) at the bottom of the filler. It reduced the amount of fuel you could get in there and was a real pain. More than once gas would splash out over the tank. The solution was to remove and empty the tank, wash it out, and then use a dremel with a cutoff wheel to remove it. Make three slices so it comes out in parts, otherwise it couldn't be removed through the filler opening. Worth the trouble!
