09 stelvio fuel filter
« on: December 08, 2019, 06:02:38 PM »
I've been using the search engine for 3 days trying to find out the proper replacement fuel filter. So far I've gotten the list of filters for later Stelvio's and read the 08/09 filters are different and references to Harper's plastic filter kit. I'd like a metal filter to replace mine at 50k miles. Do I just get the Wix filter and figure it out? I have all the proper clamps, line, pliers . Is there a link I've missed? Appreciate a shove in the right direction. Thanks. :bike-037:

GU01106090 is the part number from Guzzi.

FWIW, my '09 came with an all metal filter. I;m not sure if it was that way for all or not though.

Hmm, I've never changed my fuel filter on my '09 ... it's probably getting near time at 50K++.

I haven't looked at the manual yet ... hope it's not a huge job.   Metal filters sound better than plastic in any situation, considering the witch's brew they sell under the name "gasoline" these days.

This is what I've been putting in the tanks,     https://www.amazon.com/MAHLE-Original-KL-145-Filter/dp/B005GDJSXQ

Mahle KL145 at any import auto shop.

Another source

https://www.euromotoelectrics.com/Fuel-Filter-BMW-R-Oilhead-K-Mahle-KL145-p/ff-859kl145.htm

This is for most Guzzi models w/internal filter, Early Stelvio's w/tank wrap & smaller tank

Now here's an odd thing.

In no manual that I can find anywhere, including the "official" Guzzi shop manual for the original ('08) small-tank Stelvio, do the words "fuel filter" or any combination thereof appear.   And I can find nothing when searching on-line, on this forum or Guzzitech, that indicates "Here is the maintenance interval for this filter" OR "Here is how the fuel filter is accessed and replaced".

Everything else is in there, but nothing about fuel filters.

What's that all about?   When every tiny detail about every bit of the bike is in 274 pages with pictures and details, and nothing about this filter?

Well, that's enough moaning.    Does anyone know where that information is, or can provide a "How To"?   I see what filter I should use, and I hope that I have the mechanical sympathy to clamp it properly, make sure the hoses are good, and make sure it's the right submersible hose once I get to it, but to get there .....?

I'm feeling ya, Lannis. On the how to, remove lower front headlight cover, seat, disconnect battery, rear tank cover, gas cap and tank top cover and side tank covers. Side note here, if the side covers haven't been off before there are 4 screws that attach side covers to headlight cowl that will test your swearing vocabulary to the limit, good luck. Once these are removed you can disconnect glove compartment cable and connection. Remove 4 tank bolts and raise tank to disconnect wires and remove the fuel connection fitting. Another side note here, the connection is often stiff and difficult to remove. then remove tank and invert to expose the entire fuel pump assembly ONLY AFTER tank volume is greatly reduced so as not to create a fire hazard. Remove 6 nuts and CAREFULLY remove the pump assembly. You can then get to the filter and line you're replacing. Be sure to have the proper line, filter, clamps and pliers before you start and you are assured the filter Mahle KL 145 is a replacement as I just replaced one on my 09. Hope this helps, I was equally nervous but it's pretty easy. Good luck, if you have further issues/questions give me a PM. :bike-037:

Thanks for that ... I had the tank "loosened up" to raise it a few inches once before, in order to install a new left-side handlebar switch after I burned up the original after I connected the second high beam, without a relay.   Sounds like I need to go a couple steps further to take the tank completely off.

Getting the tank upside down on the bench is a 3-minute job on the old Brits, maybe 5 minutes on the SP.   Progress, she is a wonderful thing .... !

Big blocks have all metal fuel filters.
Small bocks have the half metal-half plastic fuel filters.
iirc MG is saving ~2$ and change using each small block filter.  R3~
