Y pipe question
« on: December 16, 2019, 04:25:23 AM »
What is the accepted wisdom surrounding which Y pipe to get for the V85 ?
There seems to be various ones from which to choose. I will be replacing the headers after having removed the bash plate and lower guards.

Unrelated,  it I thought King of Fleece’s badges looked better than the eagles.

 Good One Ed!  I spent about two hours on the internet looking up Fonts for some embroidery I was getting done last Friday. Perfect timing!

I'd guess Times New Roman.

I'm going with the Agostini "Y" pipe.  Their exhaust systems are fantastic.  I noticed the Mistral is the only one that has a "Hanger" attached, wonder what that's for?  The others don't.  Can't imagine they weigh that much.  I'll be keeping the stock exhaust, for now.

I reckon that’s what I’ll do.
That price looked pretty good too. I’m going to contact mandrel bending places in Melbourne today, to get the stainless headers done.

Also.
What’s the conventional wisdom behind the purpose of a crossover pipe, can I confidently expect catastrophic engine damage if I do not have one ?
Just thinking, if my Guzzi was a 425 cc single, it should run ok alongside another 425 cc single, so why do the headers need to be joined ?
I REALLY hope the words “torque” and “backpressure” don’t come up in any responses..
Ok.. I’m strapped in !

OK, Huzo get rid of it. They make CARC twin pipes. Run it strait back. I have open fishtails on my 700 w/no X.

Hey Huzo

Yeh I never really liked the cheap plastic stick on tank badges.  Your new ones from KOF ??

How are you finding the V85, ive only sat on one and found it a bit tall for me.

I really am liking it more than I thought I would mate.
I do take the Norge out and I love the bastard, but that ‘85 feels compact and tight as a fish’s arse by comparison. The Norge feels like your favourite pair of slippers again by comparison, slightly over size, worn in all the right places and legs like Elle Mac Pherson. It’ll still do the long trips (Mandello 2021 etc..).
I’ve reduced the seat height a bit on the ‘85, I didn’t like it either for my height, the first one I sat on was at Agostini’s and I thought I was gunna’ drop the bugger on the gutter outside prior to my ride.
I set the Ohlins on the lowest ride height and slid the forks up 18 mm in the clamps and took the rubber bungs out from under the seat, for a final ride height of 130 mm which is about 25 mm lower than stock.
It pulls like a 16 year old boy with a Penthouse (in an 850 kind of way and again much better than I expected).
I’m about half way through my modifications and she’ll be done..!
I gave the eagles the arse and fitted the beautiful badges the KoF provided, I absolutely love the look. They are slightly compressible and stick like shit to a blanket. Do NOT get them on wrongly the first time, you’ll be rooted. I took every precaution and they are perfect..! :thumb:

The hanger replicates the original exhaust, the cat has a hanger built in to it.

I think GuzziSteve nailed it above.  Lots of bikes have cross over pipes, lots of headers don't.  I think the crossover pipe is a convenient place for the O2 sensor to read both cylinders.  There may also be a bit of a silencing benefit from allowing each cylinder to feed both mufflers.

No engine damage will result.

Bought the Agostini one..

Too late for you but any other aussies needing one, worth giving Ken at Megacycle Exhausts a go, he makes a lot of cat eliminators, as well as full systems, has a dyno too, if anyone interested in tuning to new exhaust.

His cv impressive, makes for some famous names, knows his stuff

Purpose of the crossover?

I had that question for a long time, and there were discussions, but they didn't have a good answer. Over time I managed to put together the pieces and came up with this.

I was into beemers 17 years ago when I removed the crossover from my 1999 R11S. If sounded a little barkier - if you know what I mean. The exhaust note was more robust but that was all I noticed.

The answer I heard the most was that the crossover helps low end torque. Just about all twins with two mufflers have a crossover ever since the 70s sometime.

So this is the answer I came up with and think it's right. Pretty simple actually and silly to think it took so long figuring this out. The Xover provides a path to the second muffler, reducing back pressure. At higher RPMs my guess is the crossover flows less of the exhaust and has less of an effect. I didn't notice a difference removing the crossover, but then I don't launch off the line either. It possibly would be noticed on a dyno run, but I sure didn't.

Right you are.  That's why twins sound better/sharper with separate pipes.  With the crossover pipe in place, muffler volume and flow cross sectional area per each exhaust pulse is doubled.  Stands to reason that back pressure is reduced.  I agree, at higher rpm, the crossover pipe has less effect.

Why are we even debating crossovers here?  2 headers into ONE muffler on these bikes.

It’s because Guzzi put one there and I need to decide if I am going to do the same or not.
