I need a smaller tool..

I’ve come to the conclusion that the clutch lever play is a bit excessive on the V85 and has been from the get go, it has not altered in 3,000 k so there’s nothing amiss. The take up begins just out from the grip, but I don’t want to wind the adjustment out any further.
So to obviate the need for this, I wound the adjustment in at the lever, so there was a goodly amount of thread in the aluminium clutch lever pivot bracket.
I’ve had these things fret on the thread in the past due to the fact that there were not enough threads holding the adjuster. I foolishly thought I’d be able to just nip up a few thou’ on the pushrod behind the gearbox and Bob would be my mother’s brother.....
Not so.
The end of the thread is about the size of a gnat’s dick and I’m treated to the sight of a piddly threaded adjuster with a tiny flat milled onto the end.
How the bloody hell do you get anything onto that to turn it and is the tool like a spoke wrench ?
Mine is too big and it’s a problem I’ve never had to overcome.
Also it seems as tight as a fish’s arse and you need hands like E.T. to get in there...
Obviously I could wind the adjuster in at the handlebar, pop the cable off the lever at the gearbox and remove the lever so as to gain access, but Jeez...Really ?

Had a tool made up for the V7





The slots are (from memory) 3mm. And because on the V7, access is restricted (likely the V85 is too), I had the two slots made to (theoretically) enable purchase two ways. Works on the bench, have not yet tried it in situ. On the V7, I can get to it with the wheel off & the swingarm tied up, but it's easier to get to if the swingarm is off. Just got the engine back in the black V7, so I must not forget to set the clutch BEFORE putting the swingarm back on. A 13mm open end works my locknuts.

Looks exactly like the "quick and dirty" tool I made out of a piece of flat stock using a fiber wheel and die grinder. Took all of 30 seconds..

Wow, look familiar to the tool I made in early 80's cuz the tool in Guzzi's kit was too short to get to back of trans when bike is hot.

I found the adjustment (homemade spoke wrench), at the transmission to be far more sensitive/critical than @ the lever. IOW a pita on a V7 3.  R3~

Because it's such a "sensitive" issue, Pete laid out full instructions previously on here - search "V7 clutch adjustment" and "Pete Roper". With the top end fully loose, wind the adjuster in until it hits the outer body, wind back a fraction, then set the locknut. Check that the outer body is more or less flush with the gearbox cover. Then set the lever adjuster.

If the lever adjuster still winds way out, you've a problem - try a new cable first. The V7's at least are sensitive to clutch adjustment, aim at a 2mm gap between the back of the (hand) lever and the adjuster body. That should release the clutch further up from the handlebar. Perhaps the V85 is similar. Suck it and see.

Yes, you should be able to knock up the tool with a bit of flat bar, and a 3mm angle grinder disc, if you've nothing else more precise to hand. I tried a 3mm flat spanner, but found the shaft not long enough for my hands in the cramped access.

I ended up taking the lever off down the bottom and wound the adjustment in.
Greased the whole shooting match and made the tool.
Done..!
