Engine touch up
« on: January 27, 2020, 07:18:54 PM »
What's the consensus on the best way to touch up the chipping black paint on my engine casings ?

I'm not taking the bike apart, it takes me long enough to work on it normally,  :undecided:

The current idea is to use a wire brush on a dremel. Then clean well with simply green, wipe down with acetone & brush on VHT with an artist's brush, ensuring all the parts are at 50*, well, inside the house anyway.

Advise appreciated from those who have done this successfully before. I have done this unsuccessfully a few times. That's why I thought I'd ask

Something that works well for small chips is a pin striper's brush. Load the brush and touch the center of the chipped area. Paint will flow into the chip. It may take several applications and the patience of Job, though..

Your 04 has the satin black paint, not the wrinkle black of the earlier bikes, right? If so, I would recommend degreasing and cleaning as you specified, then use one of the new krylons super max, or whatever they call the paint with primer in satin black, and apply with a small foam brush to the cases as needed.

The Krylons super maxx while looks like it would adhere well doesn't mention it's for high tempreture.

VHT makes engine paint in lots of colors. I steal one of the granddaughters little art brushes.

Great question. Been meaning to ask this as well. I do know Dremel has a snake/flex type attachment that I think would be perfect for this.

As long as you are not painting the exhaust or cylinders/heads it should be fine. The VHT stuff while it works well on header pipes,I have found is a bit too thin in viscosity, and does not "cover" very well. Also the stuff I have used/seen is flat black ,not satin, so it would not blend well with the existing paint.

This is the best spray paint I have found for motor cycle engine painting.  Spay in a cup and dip a small brush in to apply.  Very durable and a good gloss finish.  I have sprayed it on many bike parts on restoration projects.  Hold up when exposed to fluids.  Application is tricky though.  Must be clean, dry and warm.  Apply as directed.  2 light coats with a 10 minute flash time and then a final coat.  I found that spraying a finish coat on cured paint will cause bubbling and failure.

Truth right there. I'll never understand someone picking up a rattle can and spraying willy nilly. RTFM..paint doesn't = paint.
