NGC chain saw hard to pull
« on: February 06, 2020, 10:41:34 AM »
My friend gave me a Poulin P3816 chain saw that he found at the dump it looks like it had little use. It is very, very hard to pull through if you remove the spark plug it pulls no problem, so I took off the muffler and with the plug in it pulls a little easier but still way to hard, remove the plug and it pulls no problem, bore looks good. I don't need it I already have three that don't like to start but more interested in why.

Might there be a stuck compression release in the cylinder head?. Itty bitty thing, ~6mm thread, 8 or 10mm deep socket hex.  R3~

Also check the exhaust for carbon build up and be sure the reed valves aren't stuck

Not to be a Debbie Downer here, but a dump is the perfect place for the Poulan. I got sick of replacing a Poulan every year and am now on year #9 with my "2 pull to start every time" echo.

FWIW, the last Poulan I had did the same thing you describe (after about 4 uses) and I never could figure it out either, so into the dump it went.

I have one Stihl and two Husqvarnas.. They are commercial models always run with non ethanol fuel... If they sit around for 6 months, it's difficult  to pull the rope, but they do start. After that the rope pull is normal effort.. I never saw a compression release but maybe I need to look closer...

Most compression release valves need to be manually reset.
Chain saws, big leaf blowers, mowers. Big inch h-d's with comp releases may have a solenoid, to do the work.  R3~

They are called "pull, pull' Poulan for a reason. I have a part time job of picking up scrap and have picked up about 50 poulans to one Stihl. Take it to the scrap yard . Most saw shops won't touch the worthles Poulan.

I'm with Luap, no Poulan's for me.  The last one I had was a nightmare to start.  The last few saws I've owned have been Stihl.  Non ethanol fuel only is very important.

Meh , you can cut as much wood with a non-running Poulan as you can with one that is running .

 What's that sound Oly ?

The problem is likely in the recoil , perhaps missing thrust washer or spool miss alignment. will pull easy with no resistance, but binds when you add compression. Could just be a mounting screw loose or missing. Pretty common chainsaw problem.

I also have a 30 year old Poulin that still works okay so getting it running isn't a priority. I always dump the gas when done with it and run it. You can't get non ethanol gas in CT unless you want Cam2.

Hasn't been a compression release on a saw for years. Most likely stuck rings from no oil in the mix or the chrome in the cylinder is gone. Go buy a Stihl!

I have an antique Stihl, naturally.. I bought it new. It don't need none of that sissy non ethanol gas.. but I did put a new fuel line on it a few years ago.. Buy an orange one once, buy blue and green ones every other year or so..

I cannot speak to chain saws...most being 2 stroke engines...but the last few 4 stroke small engine motorcycles I have bought came with an automatic compression release.  The compression release worked off the cam  and allowed a very small starter to spin the engine fast enough to start.  This on my F650 BMW single, CSC 250 cc single and CSC 450 single.  The compression release was a really clever but simple affair so it should last darn near forever.

A 2020 pull on doesn't come close to being similar to a 1980 model. And the same is true for the husky. also the same company owns husky, poulan, jonser ed partner pioneer and a dozen extinct others. Same assembly li e for most just dipped in a different vat of paint. Stihl is privately owned by the two brothers and two sisters with Stihl as their last name. For all practical purposes echo is  managed by the Japanese government.

I would take the plug out and squirt WD40 in the plug hole and pull it through 8-10 times and put the plug back in and see if it doesn't pull through more easily and maybe even run.

I tried the WD but it didn't make much difference. I haven't check the recoil pull start yet.

A couple things. If you have been trying to start it and can't get it to fire you can get it so flooded it will hydro lock with excess fuel. Take the air filter cover off, hold saw down and inverted and give it several pulls to clear the crank through the carb. My strongest suspect is that the spark arrester screen built into the muffler is severely clogged. Easy 5 minute fix, remove the 2 screws on the muffler cover, remove the cover and clean or discard the screen. I always just discard these government mandated problems. Dirty anti spark screens are a common problem with 2-smoke lawn implements after they have been used for a while. Loss of power is the first indication. I also remove the tags off all my pillows and new bedding.

My 60cc Huskie has one I brought it about 12 months ago new. I does tend to be excusive to the bigger machines, maybe the op should google the manual and take it from there.

Most chainsaws have 2 starter pawls that interlock in the flywheel when pulling on the starter rope. They are spring loaded and retract once the engine is running. If one pawl is broken then it is difficult to pull on the starter while engaging the flywheel with all the force on one pawl.
They are easy to replace.
