(NGC) - (update) Where to get binoculars refurbished
« on: October 19, 2019, 07:26:59 AM »
A while back I bought a nice 1930s vintage Zeiss binoculars at an estate sale. They do need a good interior
cleaning. Couldn't really find anyplace doing a google search. Anyone know where that could be done. Haven't tried contacting Zeiss yet.

Try asking one of the full service camera stores.  Some of those folks are quite talented.

What model Zeiss binocs?

Sounds like you need the $99 job.

Thanks for the replies. It is the Jena 8x40 model. That Bakermarine appears to be just the ticket. I only paid $8 for them with the original case so spending a hundred or so would probably be well worth it. The depth of field is amazing.

I believe most seaboard cities will have a nautical instrument refurbish shop.

$99 seems cheap these days.

I used to ride my silver 85 K100rt down Rosecrans past Baker Marine in San Diego on the way to my Point Loma girlfriend's studio apt overlooking the Submarine Base, degaussing coils, ULF antennas, Shelter Island Yacht club,  the bay... ah, those were good days. It only rained twice and you could ride everyday if you didn't mind the Santannas.

If they are labeled "Zeiss Jena" or just "Jena" they were made after WWII in East Germany by the Russians with Zeiss glass.

8x40 sound like some good birdwatchers. I prefer the 6x30 for general observation and scouting.

The labeling is:
 Zeiss Jena Delactis 8x40 binoculars.
Looking on several different sites all say they were German mfg. and were discontinued in 1936.

Here's the folks who did my dad's WWII Navy binoculars.   Did a beautiful job.   This is an extract from their estimate Email.   I got them painted and a new strap.

Lannis,

It's $150.00 for an overhaul. Paint, parts, extensive glass work extra. Add $20.00 for return. Leather neck straps $25.00. The Mark 28 is a great glass!

Sounds like you have the real thing there. Its tricky to know which ones are East German, but yours bears the word "Delactis". Im no expert, but I think that cinches it as pre war.

Will be getting them back next week from being refurbished. Went with this place out of OK, that Zeiss recommended. The guy that contacted me saying they were ready an they cleaned up well, that it has excellent optics and is a fairly rare model. Ended up spending about $300 but sounds worth it since I bought them for $8. Can't wait to use them.

Got them back late today and WOW! Very cloudy evening so let's check them out. Looking at distances from 30' to 1,000+ yards in cloudy evening light comparing to modern Celestron Outland 10x42 and Nikon Action 10 x 50s these 80+ year old Zeiss 8x42 blow them away. Very happy and this is the refurbish business.

Henryetta OK. I believe that is Troy Aikman’s hometown. A tiny town just west of the OK/AR border.
