I’ve found a lump..
« on: February 12, 2020, 07:43:43 PM »
I’ve posted on this topic before but cannot find the thread.
I have a 2007 Norge and want to fit this tensioner

to replace this one

There are reasons why, but they are beyond the scope of this thread.
I have talked to Pete about it in the past but I’m getting serious about it and would like to test the water here as well.
There is a bloody great lump cast into the crankcase which precludes the fitment  the Millepercento item. Has anyone removed the material that gets in the way and managed to get the “better” one in ?
Naturally I would take all the necessary precautions to prevent contamination of the engine with shavings, so I may be able to manage without advice on whether I should or should not.
Thanks in advance.
Huzo.

Should be able to do a nice clean job with a die grinder. At least it isn't Magnesium, I've had a couple of quick, unexpected fires while clearancing aircooled volkswagen cases for stroker cranks. That can be a bit hazardous.
I doubt you'll have issues with case strength there. Grind it out, and keep a shop vac running while you remove material, and you should be able to keep contamination to a minimum.
Good luck!

Thanks for the response..
I intended to tape over the whole exposed area with gaffer tape and drill most of it away with a safety sleeve over the drill. Just wondering if once I get the chunk out of the way, is the rest of it a fait accompli....

Does anyone know if the big block 2VPC mill, around ‘08, ‘09, or thereabouts, has the boss also ?
I seem to recall last time I floated this topic, somebody told me his 08 or similar, did not have this “feature...”

My 04 EVT has that same raised area. I don't know for how many years they kept it this way.

Thank you very much Tom.
That is a good read and I will digest it properly. The Norge will be up on blocks for it’s 180,000 k service very shortly and while I’ve got the forks out, I’ll rip the timing chest cover off and “go in for a look..”
I have a bike to ride while the Norge will be convalescing.
