I need to change the return spring in my old 5 speed. I know I need to pull the speedo drive and watch out for the ball and washers.

The question is... Do I need to be in a certain gear or neutral to just pull the cover to replace the spring?

Thank you!
Tom

I too believe neutral is correct . The shifter drum has notches in it that make removing the outer cover easier, as the sprung loaded shifter pawls ( in the outer cover)
shouldn't hook up on the shifter drum when pulling it off .  Peter

The spring. I know that you cross the legs like this:
http://www.thisoldtractor.com/moto_guzzi_loopframe_transmission_shift_return_spring_-_installing_a_shift_return_spring.html

But I seem to remember something like you also take the leg from the top of the coil and put it over first so that it goes under the lower leg where they cross.

IS this correct, backwards or does it matter?

I *believe* the legs should NOT be crossed. Top stays on top... Someone will know for sure.
OR I will check when I get home since I have a rear cover on my bench - with return spring still installed.

See above. Top stays on top.

Re: Eldo 5 Speed Return Spring? One More ? Now spring issue?

I put the spring on and it doesn't look right. The gap is too wide at the tips of the spring to be tight against the lug on the cover. Do I have the wrong spring or doing something wrong?

The first pic is the spring installed. The second pic is the new spring just laid on it and the old spring on top of it. The screwdriver is pointing at the tip of the new spring.

Help!

Well, I took the cover and spring down to Guzzi. I was pretty sure it was either the wrong spring or it needed to be tweaked.

He played with it, grabbed another spring, played with it and then grabbed a pair of pliers and squeezed the tips of the springs together. I thought this would be the fix, but I have never done this before so I asked an expert before I broke something.

Guess they don't make them like they used to??

I put the cover back on and so far I do not have a box full of neutrals. I think it still is a 5 speed

Thanks all!
