Quota to Yamaha headlight question
« on: March 19, 2020, 09:01:29 PM »
While I have my Quotas front shroud off, it looks like a perfect time to do the Yamaha headlight upgrade mentioned on this old tractor. What I wonder about is the Yammie setup is a single dual filament bulb. How would I convert the wiring on my Quota? Electrical is my weakest area, so small words por favor!

Thanks, Robert

On the Q, one side is low beam ... you got a power wire and a ground wire.  The other side is high beam ... you got a power wire and a ground wire.

On the Yamaha, one prong is ground, one is low beam power, one is high beam power.

You gotta decide how stock you want to leave your Q wiring.
You could just tape up one of the ground wires.
And then use the other ground for the Y light.

Then figure out which Q wire is High and which is Low, and figure out same for the Y light.

Then figure out do you want to cut your Q wiring and install a Y plug to fit into the Y light?
Or leave the Q wiring alone and make up 3 short wires, where one end fits into the Q wiring and other end fits into the Y light.

Hope that makes sense.

Hopefully it has no broken tabs.

Also the Yamaha one has a nice rubber fitting on the back to keep out water, hope you got that too.  One thing to consider in your re-wire, the official Yamaha plug fits nicely into that rubber fitting ... so if you plan to ride in rain a lot it might be best to go all Yamaha parts with that fitting & connection.  But I'm not sure how to get that Yamaha plug as it is part of the wiring harness and not sold separately from Yamaha.  Probably some standard 3 prong electrical connector, but I've never looked into tracking one down.

And surprisingly, the light and rubber fitting are still available new from Yamaha!

Most auto parts places carry the 3 prong headlight connectors. :bike-037:
