Oddly enough , I met Goldberg probably 15 years ago at the a restaurant in Tulsa's Cheery ST district  . Had no idea who he was , just a largish fella who had some questions about my /5 . He was very polite , presented himself in a completely non-threatening gentle fashion . Later someone told me he was a pro wrestler , still had no idea who he was . Apparently Roy D Mercer called him once , dunno , guessing that might have been interesting

We didn't see much of Gravedigger and then missed Goldberg during the no-network years.  He was back on a few weeks ago, only to get beaten by one of the new tattooed hair gel dudes.  Bummer.    Lots of idiots on there now.  Plenty of time to surf WG while Smackdown is on nowadays.

We always liked the Undertaker best, kinda the Marshall Dillon btdt do I really need to prove it again icon.

I go way back - watching Ricky Starr, Freddie Blassie, The Fabulous Moolah, Gorgeous George, and The Masked Destroyer, along with the ring side announcer, Jimmy Weldon (that pencil neck geek! per Freddie).

Fun times with my dad.

Back in the 'Burgh, we had Studio Wrestling in the 70s. Bruno Samartino was the local champ. Some of the local guys made it big. One local champ, Jumpin Johnny Defasio, was President of the Steel Workers Union in Pittsburgh. The referree, Paddy Grimes, was VP of my local USW in Aliquippa, Pa. Bill Cardille, the ring announcer, also had a weekend Horror movie show, Chiller Theatre. And of course super fan Ringside Rosie was there every night, too...

Way back when the NWA was the BMOC in STL they had a weekly show called Wrestling at the Chase. The Chase was the Chase-Park Plaza hotel and the matches were held on one of the upper floors. The hotel was also owned by the same guy who owned the Ch 11 tv station with studios in the same building.
Every week there was the same lady at ringside who was really into it. She was always yelling at the wrestlers, the refs, anyone. She would even go to the mat and pound on it while yelling.
Beer was served in paper cups like at the ball park.
If Dick the Bruiser was on the card you could guarantee when Dick was in trouble he would exit the ring, grab the woman's beer, take a swig and then pour it on his head. Then he would kick hiney.
They made sure she always had a beer.
Early on Joe Garagiola was the ring announcer. When he moved on to bigger things his brother, Mickey took over the duties. They lived nearby.

I'm enjoying this thread. My younger college educated brother said that " rasslen is sufficient amusement for inferior intelligence and my big brother is sitting on the front row"

Jack Barton Adkisson was barely making a living rasslin when he decicde to take his moms maiden name von Eric and Fritz von Eric was born using the german iron claw. When he put the iron claw on the opponets head it was usually lights out time.

Back in the 50's and 60's before wide spread TV there was "World Champeens" in Dallas, Houston and probably most major cities. A good share of wrestlers then were big beer gut brusiers, unlike today when they are extreme athletes with some like John Cena having a college degree.

Some didn't do good using their real name like "Konrad Kumquat" so they used a macho name almost like some on WildGuizzi do. ha

Wrestling madtches bring back lots of good memories just like Moto Guzzi rallies do.

Tapping out,
Tex

Season one of Dark Side Of the Ring covered the Von Eric Family. Tragic.

I loved watching GLOW when I was a kid. Mt Fiji ( our favorite) would come out and she would clean house ! awesomeness!
