'98 V11EV Rocker Clearance
« on: May 27, 2020, 08:09:11 AM »
Been running 0.004" Intake / 0.006" Exhaust since I got it and all is fine.

Like most others I'm confined by lack of open camping and lodging facilities. So, what the heck, might as well clean the motorcycles.

Turns out the "Blue Goose" has a placard on the fuel tank that I never thoroughly examined. It had basic tuning specifications. (I always used the Shop Manual)

Intake 0.002" / Exhaust 0.004" on the factory placard. These valves are stable enough to be set this close. Might be a bit quieter?

So where did all these varying numbers come from? Any reason not to set to the close figure and recheck clearances each oil change?

Maybe I should spend more time waxing and less time reading. Usually tank stickers are stupid California stuff like "Don't eat the battery, Don't run in closed garage, Motorcycle parts are carcinogens, etc)

Bikes Are cLeaner then they have been in a long time and all the fussy bits have been properly dealt with.

The tighter clearances were  to satisfy noise regulations (European only?) EDIT: US Only. She'll run much better at .004 and .006.

+1. It will run better and cooler too. Consider the '70s twins were spec'd at .006" and .008".

Some of the early square heads called for .009 and .009, Mille and Cal III for example, if memory serves, so don't be afraid of running them a bit loose.

Exhausts will tighten up, Intakes will get wider due to deposits on the face of the valve.
