Message to Pete
« on: June 15, 2020, 10:33:25 AM »
Is there any way I can post a question to Pete Roper.  He's using 'guest' status, so cannot send a PM.  In the event anyone else might know the answer, is there any way I can change the electronic odometer reading on my 12S dashboard to make it reflect actual mileage?

When the LCD panel went blank 4 years ago, I was fortunate to find a member with a spare panel from a B1100.  Of course, it was a used dash, showing several thousand miles.  I've been able to work with it easily enough.  I've set up a small Excel spreadsheet that lets me enter the mileage shown on the B11 dash, and convert it to actual mileage.

However, after all these years, the 1200 Sport will be going to a new owner, and I'd like to know ahead of time if there's a solution to reset the odometer to read actual current mileage.

Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

Bob

I can't help with a Pete contact but it can be done I believe.

Problem is that the only places I'm 90% sure can do it are both this side of the Atlantic, Carmo in Holland and Scorpio here in the UK

Sorry I can't help much, but with some luck someone else will be along who can help more

Carmo had previously told me they could do it but there were some hoops they would need to jump through to keep things on the up-and-up. I don't remember what was involved, if I ever actually knew, as this was a few years back.
I had a replacement dash which I was getting repaired and I wanted the correct mileage on it.

I never ended up getting the mileage changed.

Typically I think that was stop you "clocking" the bike.

Shouldn't be a problem for the OP as I suspect he'll be putting the figure UP  :police:

Could you just find an old topic that he’s posted and bump it with your question ?
If you’d asked last week, I could have brought it up while we were having coffee...

My mistake, I was under the impression it could be done if you took the clocks apart and accessed the board directly to talk to the chip

I got the idea miles would be added, not subtracted. Am I wrong?

I don't know if this helps at all, but I think Speedhut and Harley will set a new speedo to your miles. So it's not completely illegal to reset a speedo. Maybe check with Speedhut??

Bob,

Thanks for the offer, no need to do this. I appreciate the effort though!

Tom

Palo Alto speedo shop has been rebuilding gauges for many years, in particular for older BMWs, and they always add the existing mileage from the old speedo to the new one before sending it back.

ADVrider is a big place. What's his user name and which forum does he frequent?

I think after 20 years the mileage on the odometer is a non issue. But before that I'd be careful. However, if all you're trying to do is match the new speedo to the current mileage, what's the harm in that, especially if you're adding, not subtracting miles? And what if you install a new speedo with zero miles, then sell the bike with 2500 when actual mileage is really 30K?

No one will fault you for adding miles, and no one will fine you for installing a new zero miles unit. Where it gets ugly is subtracting miles misrepresenting what it really is. Would anyone here do that???

I think the law actually forbids misrepresenting the mileage of a vehicle, not adjusting the odometer to reflect the correct mileage on the vehicle.

Massachusetts documentation for a sale includes a statement that the mileage displayed on the odometer does (or does not, check one and sign) represent the true mileage on the vehicle. It mentions nothing about whether or not the odometer was replaced or adjusted to produce the reading. Just a question concerning the accuracy of the reading.

I'm curious. Are you looking to advance the odometer? How does the odometer get its signal? The old BMW K100 had an electronic speedometer that worked off a Holl sensor at the final drive. To calibrate the analog speedo needle you could just put the Holl sensor on top of the body of an old Weller pistol soldering gun. When you pulled the trigger on the soldering gun the AC field through the transformer pulsing at 60 CPS  produced a speedometer reading somewhere around 50 mph (forget exact number). But it did run the speedo. Perhaps you could advance your device similarly.

Advancing an odometer is one thing, and could be done through such trickery, but I though the OP wanted to reduce the odometer reading to reflect the mileage of the actual bike? That's not possible.

I've asked if mileage needed to be added or subtracted, but ohiorider hasn't been back since he opened the thread. From the way it was worded it sounded likely that he wanted to add mileage rather than subtract.

Mark,  I'm the next owner of the Sport. Bob, being the great guy he is wants to add mileage to the odometer so it reflects accurate current mileage. He did a dash change 5 years ago at 68K miles or so.  I'm not worried about it, just thrilled to have a 1200 Sport. Have wanted one for a while now.
