I think that looks like a great deal (note the modified trees, aftermarket brake pedal and seat, etc), and it would be a good way to see if a sidecar rig will work for you.

     I don't think I've ever read anything about Sputnik cars, but that whole rig looks very well thought out and built.

     If anyone was thinking of getting into a guzzi rig, that would be worth taking a hard look at. imo

I believe Sputnik is Russian built. It's a rather lightweight chair. The two rigs I've seen with the Sputnik chair were easy to tip while parked just by lifting up on the chair. They were not rigs I would feel comfortable driving with an empty chair. The rig in the picture seems to have moved the chair a bit further from the bike to give the chair weight more leverage to help stabilize the rig. The outboard diamond plate box filled with tools would also work in providing  stability.

I agree ... although he does mention that this would make a great "starter rig".   I don't know much about sidecars; what is "starter" about this setup?   I know that a California is a world class tug, and it looks like a nice job ...

He lives 4 minutes down the road from me if anyone needs me to take a look for them. He is Mostly a BMW airhead fan I think. I would see glimpses of this the last couple summers but never caught up to him.

I have a Sputnik on my BMW /2 rig and seems a quality piece of kit.....all steel with substantial framing...the slide forward opening serves well....seat is well “appointed” with heavy vinyl...I’ve removed the windshield and wind drag decreased significantly.....n othing fancy, but utilitarian. Cannot compare but doubt it’s “light” compared to some of the fiberglass units out there.
I’ve always compared driving a rig more to driving a tractor than motor biking.....not for everyone fo’ sho’.

Edit: tool box, I think is an owner add on...step there for pax entry...I’ve got a Jerry can there.

Looks like a nice setup, and a good price!  Ive wanted a sidecar since I drove one back in the late 80's..  Sad I dont have the cash to jump on this one.

     With all of the storage space I wondered about the tool box, I thought it was a just a nice step up for 2 or 4 legged passengers; but I can see that it could be effective for ballast.

They are all "starter rigs" until you get good at it. At the asking price it's certainly an inexpensive way to get the sidecar experience.

As far as being a beginner rig, I don't think there is a distinction. Any rig will bite you in the butt if you make a mistake. This particular one has a lighter chair which makes a mistake apparent more rapidly. Ballast the chair low and you are set (100# sandbags toward the rear)

Sputnik is a nice size chair for the smaller and lower COG BMW R6O/2 that WRBIX mentioned.

I'd stuff a big car battery in it.  If I didn't have 2 hacks, I'd be doing a fly-n-ride.
