which Brembo caliper?
« on: July 01, 2020, 02:29:39 PM »
My Son & I mounted a bunch of EV bits on his '03 Stone, including the dual-disc front wheel. BUmmer to find that the EV right side caliper has different bolt spacing than the Stone fork leg. Apparently the proper caliper is a scarce item.  Anybody have one they'll sell?  Just knowing a correct part number would be a help......Guzzi, Brembo, Ducati (MG Cycle says they were used on some Ducati models).
Thanks,

What is the distance center-to-center of the mounting holes? 40 mm?

I have two used Brembo calipers with 40 mm spacing that came off a Jackal (I added a second disk and caliper to that bike). About 43k miles on them--I may have new pads for the calipers, too.

$75, split the cost of shipping.

I also have a set of 45 mm Jackal forks in very good condition (new seals and fork oil this winter--I got a set of leading links for my sidecar rig, so I don't need these anymore). $125, split the cost of shipping. Jackal front fender (silver with some minor scratches), too.

I've got a complete EV fork, triple clamps, axle, fender brace etc, not in use if needed. Oh and one front caliper, I forget which side it's for.

dim dark memory there is basically two brembo caliper bolt spacing on axial mounted calipers, 40mm and 65mm the narrower spacing was used in the early mid 90's and the latter after that before radial calipers. There are or were adapter kits made may or may not still be avalible because the latter calipers in general are much better. However Brembo's caliper for any of the Ducati Monster,SS, ST2,3,4 996/8, 749,999 etc will bolt straight up. I can recommend a 916 master cylinder to drive two 999 caliper is a brilliant combination Aprilia calipers also fit straight up. Guzzi is not big enough or Ducati for that matter to get Brembo to do special run for them so they used whatever was the going thing at the time.

HD for the last number of years have used Brembos although exactly what configuration I don't know, with chrome plate with their name on it to cover up the fact.

Y'all are quoting 40 & 65 MM, I'm asking about the distance between the mounting holes...where the caliper bolts to the lugs on the fork leg. I don't have the Stone or an EV here now, but the measurement I'm talking about on my '74 Eldo (G5 fork legs) is about 110mm. I sent an email to my Son  to get a measurement from his Stone fork leg.

That is correct, the distance (centres) of the mounting lugs 40 mm or 65 mm... (Same thing but 110 mm on your Eldo having a 08 Brembo 2 piston caliper)
This was a Moto Guzzi fitment Brembo I got a while back, that is the 65 mm centres version.

The fork lugs of course match those centres, the only thing that can change is where the lugs mount radially as far as different diameter brake rotors but the Moto Guzzi's you mention look to have the same 320 mm rotors.

If the EV wheel, rotors and (2 ) calipers were bought, how can the left caliper bolt up and not the right side ?

Because we mounted the EV wheel in the stock Stone forks, utilizing the Stone caliper on the left side. The rotor on the EV wheel lined up perfectly & is how my Son is riding the bike now. The problem arose when the when the right side EV caliper wouldn't bolt up to the right fork leg. The EV caliper does mesure 40MM, and my Son checked the Stone fork....it's 65MM.
So, I know I need a 65mm right side caliper, just have to find one.

You need a 2001 or newer caliper , it doesn't matter what model it comes from , Jackal , EV , Stone .

Or, swap the fork lowers so they match and use the caliper you have?

This could be the caliper you need except color?

That make sense  :thumb:
I have a 65 mm R/H caliper that I got off Lamontsanfurd  (At the time I could not find a 40 mm) but that is not much use being the other side of the Pacific.

Those calipers were used on many bikes so the search can be BMW also but will say, get the newest year possible as the piston and dust seals do deteriorate over time and Brembo (afaik) do not do a kit for that caliper that contains the dust seals.
Even the factory Brembo P4 version (short piston 30/34) with new pistons does not have dust seals included.

The caliper I got (00) being a 2000 had one sticky piston due to the seals, I was going to replace them anyway but a complete kit was hard to find.
I have a re seal kit on the way from the UK (powerhouse-uk /eBay)  that has the 9 seals, copper washers, bleed nipple/cap and lubricant for what would be US$40 posted.
They are great calipers when the seals are still in good order. same as the 2 piston 08's.

There are also adapters that allow you to mount 40 mm calipers on 65 mm forks (and vice versa, I think).

https://motowheels.com/i-8518113-corse-dynamics-axial-caliper-adapters-65mm-to-40mm.html

I have a new unused set of adapters that I was going to use on my sidecar rig, but I found some nos 65 mm calipers for a good price, so I don't need the adapters.

$40 shipped.

Good info posted here. I have a 02 Stone and my future plans were to upgrade to twin disc.  So LesP....  Do I read that right that they dont make replacement seals for these? I had planned on searching for some Duc parts from someone that was upgrading.

Afaik Brembo do pressure seal but not the dust seals.
Even the P4 GP 30/34 caliper kit (Only $34 here is AU) that has new pistons (shorter that standard P4) does not have dust seals.

Some googling found that place in the UK, even US posts that I found were buying off them.
I got this kit which even with the exchange rate and post was still good https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Motorrad-Guzzi-Nevada-750-Classic-front-brake-caliper-seal-rebuild-kit-04-2005/163797995968

Even the main importer told me via email they are waiting for factory Brembo P4 kits from Italy (- delays) but they do not have the dust seals.
Why that is is odd but a lot of these calipers are old now so the seals can do with replacing, the hard anodised pistons seem to last well.

They were used on BMW's also (black) this set came up locally and from a bike breaker.
I surprised at the asking price (US$50 or so)
