Get it to where it needs to go ....
« on: July 08, 2020, 09:14:35 PM »
At the Virginia N.A.R. at the Meadows of Dan a couple weeks ago, I was talking to a Gold Wing rider named Rusty, real nice guy, a welding instructor by trade.   We got to talking about (wait for the punch line before anyone goes ballistic with the Red Button) the recent "Stimulus Payments", and we both learned that neither one of our incomes had been affected this year, but we still got a Stimulus Payment.

Rusty had a great idea.   In order to get the money to the people it REALLY needs to get to, he said that he's leaving $20 to $40 tips every time he buys a meal, until his stimulus money is gone.

So I've been doing it too ... what I do is just leave a tip equal to the price of the meal (in other words, a 100% tip), and that way, people who have been out of work, or are working through slow times, can get the money directly into their pocket rather than to big companies that can weather the times much more easily.

Anyhow, since I got the idea at a motorcycle rally, I figured I'd pass it on, and anyone who feels like it's a good idea can just start doing it.   I wouldn't have thought of it if he hadn't mentioned it ....

My wife and I have a modest scholarship fund for students at the local community college.  The money went there.
If you don't need it and use it to help others, it's all good.  Great idea, guys!

You dang commie!   Seriously though, a great idea. My daughter worked as a server for a couple of summers.  Had some harrowing experiences (And this in an upmarket place.) and told us some pretty sad stories about hard luck lifers in the restaurant business, about both employees and employers. And that was BEFORE --19. Since then I always tip well.

Communism is when they MAKE you do it ... "Helping Hand" is when you do it without being forced to ... .

Seriously, my pension and annuity haven't been affected at all, and the "Payment" was partly my own money anyway (where else would "they" get it?).   Besides, we had to cancel a couple of vacations (which money is going to go the 160,000 mile service on Fay's Subaru and a new set of tires, that'll all knock a big hole in $3,000).

Anyhow, it's a way to do the right thing without insisting that someone pass a law about it!   There's always someone who seems to work hard and do the right thing but doesn't quite make it ... a "hand up" can do wonders.

I think its a great idea. I have been tipping more generously recently, never thought to use my stimulus check money for that. My barber was not working for 12 weeks, I paid him double when I went to see him when he opened back up, just because...

I'm a little guilty (not much) because my barber never really stopped working, he just had people call and they'd come in the back, he stayed busy and is REAL busy right now, takes 2-3 hours to get a haircut (there's only 2 barbers in town).

It gave me the opportunity to discover that my daughter-in-law is an ace haircutter, has her own clippers, does all her family's hair (her grandma did hair for a living), and is perfectly willing to cut my hair any time, and she does a great job.    I'll probably never go to a barber again, unless I just want to sit around the shop and listen to the extremely entertaining talk ... !
