V85TT Clutch Issue / Failure
« on: July 13, 2020, 07:27:17 AM »
So the story goes like this:

I complained about the clutch being "weak" in the sense that I felt like there was some disconnection between the throttle opening and the power going to the wheels. It was a noticeable delay where sometimes the bike would skip / hop / jump, whatever you want to call it, when I twist the throttle, especially at lower revs and during deceleration.

I wrote about this in the V85 Merged Threadfest HERE.

So now, after a couple of months, with the impact of the pandemic gradually decreasing, it was time for me to send the bike for some open heart surgery, and here are the findings:

According to the mechanics at my dealership, they said these markings are "uneven and abnormal", and it seems as though the clutch plate is not being pushed properly therefore the contact is improper or misaligned.

And this makes me wonder if there was a bad batch of pressure plates or clutches in general that were installed on some V85s, or could this just be an individual thing, especially since I've seen a slight increase in people complaining about the trans / clutch...

Also, does the flywheel and clutch plate look bad? I don't know how some things should or should not look like. I mean visually to anyone, even those that have no mechanical inclination whatsoever, this looks wrong, but mechanically, would it perform bad just because it looks bad?

That looks like it may have been slipping. The question is what caused it? If you sensed it slipping with no pressure on the lever then it could be anything along the system causing that. Make sure the mechanic understands the nature of what you experienced and they will find the culprit.

It might've been but it wasn't noticeable. I didn't encounter any slipping symptoms, but it was very "hoppy" at low revs and deceleration. It's as if the the pressure plate decides to disengage and engage at will under low speeds / revs or deceleration.

I hope this is covered under warranty....

Fingers crossed, but most likely, yes.

Slip would probably be more noticeable in the lower gears, where engine torque & compression inertia through the clutch offers the most "resistance" when accelerating & decelerating.

Bit of a bummer for a new bike!  I feel for you.  Seems like your dealer/s & Piaggio have given you the runaround regarding a diagnosis & fix from what I've been following in your saga.  Not particularly confidence-inspiring.  Whilst your particular problem seems to be a bit of a statistical anomaly, as a new bike buyer you fully deserve a "perfectly" serviceable machine.

Hope they finally provide you a definitive fix so that you can properly enjoy riding your new bike.
