check your tires in this heat
« on: July 22, 2020, 04:54:32 PM »

CHECK your tires in this heat! Every bike I own has a TPMS on it so I don't have to bend over and check them every morning. great for pressure. But if I had looked closely I might have seen this earlier. I needed gas yesterday afternoon and was feeling a slight out of balance thump from the front. Now these are Conti RAIII tires and yes I've gotten my money's worth but those bumps are air bubbles and feel like a balloon. Very slow ride home for a new Bridgestone A41 street version.

Mine should be fine because when it’s this @£¥! Hot it just sits in a climate control basement 🥵

And when you need to add air I recommend these https://www.amazon.com/Aluminum-Aprilia-Triumph-Carrozzeria-Marchesini/dp/B00SVENXX8/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=90+Degree+Red+Angled+Aluminum+Tire+Valve+Stems&qid=1595458148&sr=8-4

Vagrant -- whose TPMS did you choose?
BTW that tire saw some serious heat.  Is it the rider or the weather?

Thanks for the heads up.  I'm getting a weird "pattering" from the front end on my new-to-me EV Stone in 60 mph sweepers.  I was going to check the steering head bearings but I'll take a good peer at the front tire first.

Tks for the warning, it is a bit disconcerting, I've got a set of RA III's ready to go on.

That bubbled area looks like a serious carcass defect, not what I would've expected on a top ranked tire like the Conti, jmho.

Your tire doesn't look that worn, but I agree with Bert, the rubber looks like it has temp damage. I've seen tires at the race track show similar scuff damage, I thought it was from pushing cold tires too hard before they warmed up, maybe it is the heat. idk

Bert when you put on that 90 degree valve stem, did you add any silicon or sealant on the inside or just mount it dry?

I've never replaced a valve stem before, and I've got a similar set of Puig stems going on very soon and I've read just a few people that have had trouble getting them to seal.

80 -- you can see the Black O-ring above the threads in the picture.  My first set of stems were for the Norge and were installed professionally. I don't think any sealant was used.  And they didn't leak.  My second set will go on the V7 III Stone and will also be professionally installed.  I aim them to the right for easy access when leaning on the side stand.

A possible leakage source is a rough outer edge for the hole in the rim.  I don't know if the installer filed it smooth or not.  Check with  Bridgeport and Ariete.  They seem to be performance people.

I know about race track wear which is why I pulled Vagrant's chain but as a cold tire phenomena that's a new one for me.  Good to know.  And Yes my instructors told me to always take the first lap a bit slow, not only to warm the tires but also to discover any surprises that arrived during the night.  And sometimes I forgot.  Flatspotted $1,000 worth of tires on first lap.  Thump thump thump for the next three days and the long drive home.  My memory is better now.

Ha, too old for rider induced heat. ridding at a good pace in the mountains but that heat started that day I believe from the bubbles causing vibration.

Re TPMS last one i put on the V85 was a Stryker. Amazon or ebay just plug in motorcycle TPMS. spend 50-60 and buy from a US supplier so u don't have to wait 6 monthss and if there is an issue you have help. Don't cheap out and get $25. units you will bbe sorry.

Vagrant, after seeing the TPMS you put on your V7, I ordered a set for the GRiSO.
Been very pleased with it these past two years.
All those crazy o-rings trying to do their job of holding pressure in, and slowly deteriorating over time... Good peace of mind to take a quick glance down at display and confirm tire psi AND temperature!
Also, on those hot days, combined with "tar snakes" on the road surface, your tire can squirm around a bit and you wonder if it was tire psi or not. A quick glance down at display can be comforting... :thumb:
At <$75, this should be considered.

Hot temps and high speeds on the highway is hard on tires. Add a little under inflation and a 50% tread has quickly gone bad under me on two occasions on 100 mile runs. The rubber gets so hot it becomes over softened and does weird things like flying off in chunks.
