Amount of sno-seal
« on: July 30, 2020, 06:06:36 PM »
I did some searching and found that sno-seal seems to be highly recommended for restoring leather saddle bags. For two medium to large bags should I buy one container or two? Don’t wanna be wasteful if a little goes a long way, but don’t wanna short myself either.

Thanks, Robert

One Jar should be plenty for two bags. Warm them up first in the sun or with a hairdryer and it will permeate the leather much better. Great stuff , been using it for years on my work boots and even used it in the seams on my griso's dash to keep the moisture out.

Sno-Seal is readily avalaible at may retailer so why not buy on container and see ho far it goes. If yo need  an additional one pick it up at a later date.

If the bags are really dry applying a thick coat of product then washing over it with a hair dryer melts it and it'll soak into the leather.

At the risk of sounding clueless, I had never heard of this stuff till searching here for leather restorer. Is it at hardware stores or big box stores like Wally World? Keep in mind I’m in GA, where anything more than a dusting shuts everything down and causes mass panic in grocery stores! Lol

I think I got it from REI.  It is a soft wax-like material.  I think it works well for sealing up seams and conditioning leather that is in good shape.  I can't say about how well it restores leather.
Another product that I think does well to restore oils in leather is Chamberlin's leather milk.  It is very light- so that, followed by a waxier material is what I have used on old, dried out boots and such.  For the Sno Seal, I put the item in a box with an infrared heater bulb (well separated! big box!)

I buy it locally here in Spartanburg, pretty sure at Walmart in small containers. I prefer to buy the larger quart size metal can that I either order or ask for at Christmas from the inlaws.   Everything smooth leather I have gets saturated with sno seal as soon as it comes home, from work gloves to boots to jackets.  It's my favorite such product, but debating about such things is just another oil thread...

I apply it thick and heavy, then use a hair dryer to warm the leather and liquify the sno seal. First it will turn to liquid, then just disappear into the leather.  I repeat this until no more is absorbed.  Too much heat is a liability so be careful. That's how a very trusted cobbler/shoe repairman taught me to do it.  If you just wait for it to absorb slowly, it's a much longer process.

I use sno seal to waterproof leather that is already clean.

I recommend starting with saddle soap.

One should be enough, even if you attack everything leather in sight. A little goes a long way.

Thanks everyone. I’ll clean em up with saddle soap then apply after sunlight. We don’t have hair dryers in the house that I know of! Maybe the oven?

You can use a regular heat gun as long as you're careful.  It's easy to melt synthetic stuff like thread or overheat/cook the leather and make it harden & shrink.  Probably could even heat the sno seal in a container to melt before applying with a brush.

Five decades ago I used snow seal on my leather hiking boots.

Three decades ago I found out about using olive oil on my leather Stubben saddle and tack.  It was cheaper than the special tack dressing and actually worked better for me.

Now I use olive oil on all my leather to oil and protect.   snapping the red suspenders

Snow seal is great if you want to seal out snow and water for stream crossings but olive oil does fine for my wet grass upland hunting in leather boots.
