Burning Down

California is burning down or at least some of it. We have one of the fires right near us in fact we got an evacuation order. We jammed to get everything packed including several rescue animals, cats, dogs and a chicken.I was going to leave the bikes but my wife insisted I put them on the trailer. Not a motorcycle trailer but one that hauls a couple of kneel down rtace boats. I didn't think they would fit but I got them both on. We left and then the evacuation order was lifted so we came back. However we are still on an advisory order. I found safe place for the bikes and another for the 5th wheel RV. We are still packed except for the animals and ready to leave after we load them up again. The fire is still raging but is moving away but could still circle around if the wind shifts. Across the highway is still under an evacuation order and that is only a block away. So everyone, especially here in Cali be careful, double threat, fire and -.

Had a forest fire approach our house about 20 years ago ... it's a scary, helpless feeling. We had a FD guy with us on the radio with the guys on the fire line as they set a backfire ... car running and ready to go ... but the backfire worked and they got it out.
I had a new respect for the skills of firefighters after that. Hope your story ends well. You can tell yourself "Well, it's just 'stuff'", but there are a lot of memories and a lot of yourself in your home ....

Thaks guys. My shop burned down three and half years ago taking all my tools, shop equipment and my pristine Harley Deuce. If it happened again I would basically throw in the towel. I will not go through all the crap with insurance and mortgage companies again. Just rent a place, buy a new bike and call it good. I just paid off last month on what the insurance company wouldn't cover. It is looking like we are out of the woods though.

My heart goes out to you. We know what you are going through. We had to grab what we could and run for it during the floods here in Nebraska a year ago last spring. Spent a week not knowing if we still had a home left to go back to. We came out more or less OK in the end but many of our neighbors didnt. Praying you weather this with out too much loss.

My cousin in the hills east of Santa Rosa almost lost his place a few years ago. Most of his neighbors weren't so lucky. Fortunately he'd been cutting back the brush in the months prior, plus he fed the fire crews and helped them out - smart move. They were right there ready to take care of his place - no way could they save them all. Unfortunately he didn't have a generator, so when power went down, so did the well. First chance he got a generator.
Hope all goes well for you.

Back at the start of this year you guys were sending your thoughts and prayers to us down under. It is now time to multiply these and send them back.
I wish for the best outcome possible in these unstable times. Remember as hard as it to lose possessions they can be replaced to some extent. Lives are irreplaceable. Stay as safe as practical.

I had a bad fire in Idaho back in 95. I couldn't get anything but a rifle by the door, that I kept there for bear.
When the heat got so bad I saw the fender of my dirt bike begin to melt so I ran up and kicked it and it roared to life.
I powered up into the woods and around and down a small hill. As I sat there on the bike, the fire hit the 25 pounds of blasting powder and a couple of thousand rounds of rifle and pistol powder and a dozen blasting caps. With a mighty roar it all went into the sky in a mushroom cloud.
Next day I sifted through the ashes for anything I could find. All my rifles and pistols were gone except the one I threw into the woods at the start. I did however find the keys to my safety deposit box at the bank. I lost about 90 percent of what I owned.

Santa Cruz county is lucky to have Redwoods. Can't think of a better tree to battle a wildfire. Above the fog line, the oak, madrone, and manzanita took a devastating hit. Sad too now for those evacuated and trying to stay safely socially distanced. Too bad the natural beauty cannot return in the time span it takes to rebuild a house. Hopefully will be no more than the one live lost so far.
