More details--- I need a copy of a form MVT 102. Apparently this is available from any town office (not BMV, just town). If someone would be so kind as to mail me one, it would save a trip up to Maine. I'll have to come up once I have the form filled out but I'm trying to cut down on the number of trips needed.

If someone can send me a form, please send me a PM and I'll give you my address. And one day, there will be some beer in it for you.  :boozing:

Thanks,

Seth

Seth,

I sent you a PM, but let me give you some more details here.  I bought a "64 Sears / Gilera 106 off Craigslist, in the dead of night, with no paperwork, just $400 cash.

Mass RMV was no help in getting it registered/titled.  The "deal" known w New England bikers is to register it in VT.  They are helpful, and let you do it entirely by mail, even faxing/emailing you the forms to fill out.  Getting it registered in VT added legitimacy to my claim, and Mass RMV was fine after that.

However, the VT thing may only work for smaller displacement bikes, and vintage bikes, so they don't become a haven for stolen Harleys.

Let know what path you take, and how it works out.

Thanks Joe and Lucian. I think Vermont is not so easy for converting a Salvage title to a Rebuilt title. At least it looks to me like you have to have the bike inspected there and it also seems like you might have to be a Vermont resident (that part isn't entirely clear). If I can see the form I mentioned from Maine (MVT-102, it is the one form they DON'T put on the internet...), I'll be able to tell if I can title the bike (which currently has a salvage title) in Maine. It appears I can't do it in RI because there are no certified/licensed salvage inspectors in RI (for bikes) and the law requires that you have a salvage inspection by a licensed salvage rebuilder. Thus, its a big Catch-22 in RI but I think Maine may be doable.

For the record, here is what a "totaled" bike tooks like:

The total damage on this side is, missing side cover and missing front turn signal lens. Of course, this is the good side. The left-hand side had a creased Mistral muffler/silencer and a missing side cover...

I have replaced the mufflers on both sides with OEM ones and new(er) side covers. Pretty sure the side covers were just removed by the insurance folks-- man the prices those things fetch for bits of plastic! (I found some quite reasonably priced after much scouting around)

Seth, I called my town office today and they have not heard of a mvt 102, they do have a  mvt 2 that they said is an application for title and is more than one page long . That is why it is not available on line . I will swing over there tomorrow and grab one and I can scan and fax or email it to you. They also said that in maine this is the only form for vehicle title , they do not distinguish  between cars or motorcycles so I guessing this must be the form you need.

Hi Lucian,

Thanks! Hmmm, when I have called the BMV (I think I always get the Augusta office), I have been told I need MVT-102 and MVT-103. I can get 103 online. My understanding is that 102 is specific to the case of salvage titles but given your news, yes, please send me the 2 form and I'll see if that will work. I'll PM you further contact info.

Ok , just came from the town office, Seth you were right , i have mvt 102 and mvt 103 in hand. Will have wife scan and e mail to you when I get home after work . Mvt 102 is application for certificate of salvage and 103 is affidavit of rebuilt or repaired salvage vehicle.
