my dizzy is installed backwards on the lemans?
« on: September 08, 2020, 12:58:37 PM »
I think my dizzy has been 180 degrees off this whole time if thats possible.  while going through the timing diagnosing the vibrations, I noticed the dyna rotor had lot of "wobble/run out", to the point it wore a way an area between the set screws and chamfered the edge of the sensors on the plate.   I couldn't get the rotor to spin without hitting the sensors.  I then noticed that the dizzy shaft isn't completely round (which I guess some of you already know), anyway if I positioned the rotor where the 2 flat areas are, it spun true.  then I looked at the notch in the central shaft and it was at @5 o'clock while the right cylinder was tdc. as per guzziology it should be at 11 o'clock (which I knew already) how I ended up installing it like that I have no idea, tired maybe?  is it possible to have run that many miles like that?  I guess so.  im going to take a break from the bike for a while to clear my head.  to much confusion over this has me chasing my tail.  need to step back and clear my head a bit I guess.  I already reinstalled the dizzy and set the static timing with a light. lights come on in the right spots

maybe I installed it with the left cylinder at the static mark as opposed to the right

It is possible.  A friend had a V7 Sport that way and it ran funny. Wanted me to fix it and I told him to take it back to the guy who restored it. Otherwise he'll never know a mistake was made.  You can only time 1 side w/marks in window.

Buttoned up the dyna and no more run out of the rotor.  rotor clears the sensors.  I guess I really did install the distributor incorrectly.  ran out of time to do anything else except fire it up just to make sure it starts.  it did but slowly. had the power on for a while while using the test light for the timing, hours actually as I had to recheck all the flywheel marks and adjust everything 10 times to make sure it was right.  think the valves have tightened up a bit too.  next chance I get ill retorque the heads again and readjust the valves.

Being 350 miles after the rebuild, at what point will the valve clearance stabilize? Should this be the last time I need to retorque the heads for a while?

You had a rather big lunch  :boozing: you realize you have fundamentally screwed up the assembly and you have a choice, 30mins before Friday knock off you can swap the plug wires or you can pull the whole thing out and do it properly. What's more likely to happen?

The plug wires on the early loops cross over.
I think it would be very difficult to get the timing out by 180 degrees, if it fired correct for the left cylinder it would be out a mile for the right hand one since it would be expecting a spark at 270 degrees.
The easy way to check would be time it for TDC on one cylinder them put it at TDC on the other.
Remember the engine rotates 2 turns for every spark when you see the exhaust valve closing and the inlet valve opening that's TDC on the wrong stroke, turn it 360 and the points for that cylinder have just opened.
